THIS TRULY CHANGES EVERYTHING!

Naomi Klein, in her book This Changes Everything, provides an important critique of capitalism. She has, as yet, not provided a convincing case for an alternative economy to capitalism. Robin Wood and his colleagues at the ThriveAbility Foundation are on a ThriveAbility Journey toward the establishment of a Multi-Capital Operating System for a Regenerative Economy that is scalable to diverse local, national, and global living conditions. Wood points out that the many promises of recent sustainability initiatives for more sustainable worlds have not been delivered as expected. Building on various sustainability initiatives in various organizations (profit, triple bottom line, corporate social responsibility, non-profit, et al), the ThriveAbility Foundation is currently creating a ThriveAbility Index that measures six different capitals, human and social, financial and intellectual, natural and manufactured. The first book to openly advocate for multicapitalism

This book could very well be the first to openly advocate for the adoption of multi-capital thinking, or multicapitalism, in organizations and commerce, while also addressing the issue of how leadership itself needs to (and can) change its outlook in those terms. As such, it offers one of the few theories of change extant on the subject and should be recognized as such by sustainability managers, C-suite executives and economic policy advisors alike.

As an editor for Art in America , a contributor to such scholarly publications as Skyline and October , and a professor of art history at Yale and Barnard, Owens was a theorist and critic of contemporary culture. Here his colleagues have assembled several of his essays and critical writings as a memorial to Owens, who succumbed to AIDS in 1990 at 39. Set within the framework of the postmodernist movement of the 1970s and 1980s, these highly esoteric essays cover such diverse topics as photography, allegory, feminism, gay politics, art in the marketplace, serial art, and psychoanalysis. The concluding section contains valuable bibliographic material and syllabi devised by Owens for his university courses. Unfortunately, the text is laden with academic jargon, making it intelligible to a select few. Recommended for specialized art history and contemporary culture collections.

Beautiful Otherness : Definition is as SHIFT,FAIL, FOLLOW

I wasn't planning on writing a review of this text but am so irritated by the previous reviewers "review" I find it necessary to provide some sort of information about this serious collection of work.

First of all Craig Owens was an outsider with a job a GENIUS. That means his insight is an art form, unique and idiosyncratic. He is not a Philosopher but a cultural critic with insights profound enough to cross disciplines. Yet because he reviewed art and so few are educated in art many curious minds are never introduced to his work. This does not mean the Aesthetic of Otherness as presented by Owens is discipline specific, nor does it mean Owens is not accessible. To understand Owens one must consider the work he references and its time period.

Perhaps one of the most important essays in this delightful book is The Discourse of Others. This is assigned reading for most art students and cultural studies folks. The text explores the relationship between post-modernism and Lacanian polarity. This is a contradiction since to be a Lacanian one believes in the triad of symbolic order. This is the point, otherness is not responsive. He starts the essay with a heavy use of Frankfurt School Key words reminding the reader of allegory, of antagony of protagony... he reminds us of the economic history of culture. He continues on to present the dichotomy of disassociation and power as a matter of continual cultural unrest. Perhaps this is similar to an old friend reminding us that life has never been pretty, noting this is its glory. This visualization is accomplished with reference to the writing of Strauss and Derrida, Later he brings in the thesis ie the meaning of Otherness with a direct note by Paul Ricoeur a French Anarchist and humanist. Throughout the essay he discusses the rejection of reality, of propaganda and the reception of what we now call "new media" with reference to the media's creators. This is what makes Owens profound. He is discussing the creator in an ever evolving age of virtual and using scholars like Baudrillard to sell his case. Brilliant!

In another essay Improper Names, Owens explores the relationship between cosmopolitan and local rhetorical conventions. He starts by exploring site specific conceptual art and anthropological works which incorporate the history, tradition and use of names. He discusses the insult of tourism, of accessibility , of simplification but celebrates the investigation. It becomes clear Ownes is concerned with a unique brand of isolated mass consumption, of the Branding of Otherness. Even making refernce to the work of Josef Beyus, whose personal friend once told me his work is the exploration of good people doing bad things. Making this point ever so bitter sweet. At the very least one could note some comparison to Foucault's concerns with Maddness, that as society we are obsessed with being normal, defining ourselves by the perception of illness.

Overall Owens is a committed critic who's compelling work made note of current happenings in the cultural sector during the 1980's. He was a defining and innovating force participating in elite conventional communities while simultaneously challenging every aspect of its institutional nature. When reading Owens there is never a question of one's inclusion in the investigation as his writing is a labor passion.

About the Author
Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., received his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his postgraduate medical education at the University of California, Los Angeles. The author of The Developing Mind, a pioneering book on neurobiology and attachment, he is currently an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine.
Mary Hartzell, M. Ed., is a child-development specialist and parent educator. She has taught children, parents, and teachers for more than thirty years and is the director of the renowned First Presbyterian Preschool of Santa Monica, California.

A MUST READ FOR ALL PARENTS

The reviewers that gave this book less than 4-5 stars are exactly the people that need to re read this book. We see the world through the lens of memory and everything in our past influences our behavior. While this is not a " how to " manual for solving certain problems step by step with our children, it is a much deeper and longer lasting fix. It helps the reader to self examine and become the kind of parent they want to be instead of the kind of parent that they are programmed to be based on their family history.
I think this is a fantastic book for parents that are serious about being the best people they can be for their children. I wish it was written 30+ years ago when I had my first child.
If you are fairly intelligent and want to prepare yourself to be the best parent you can be ( any age child ) - do yourself and your kids a favor. Get the book. I wish they taught this stuff in school.

Maybe the most important parenting book ever written!

This book will help you be a better parent at any point in your life. It demystifis what is happening for you the parent when you and your child find your selves embroiled in a power struggle that seems disproportionate to the events at hand. It explains what is going on for you and what is likely happening for your child. Part of it is written for the lay person and part for those interested in the neurobiology of what is occurring. Reading either or both parts should lead you to a personal "aha" moment. It's great as a parenting guide and is informative regarding your own childhood especially if you feel there were unresolved issues between you and your own parents.

Very helpful

This book has been extremely helpful for me. I did not read the whole thing because it got a bit too slow about halfway through, but the first half is worth 5 stars. There are a lot of things that happened in my childhood that I would brush off as irrelevant to my life now, but when I really examine them and come to terms with the good & the bad that is when I know I can grow past them and be the parent that I want to be.

I have been a gentle, attachment-oriented parent since having my first baby 6 years ago. But I found that I would sometimes get unbelievably angry at my children, completely out of proportion with the situation, and I couldn't control myself. I would lash out and scare them (though never physically hurt them). I didn't want to be this way, but I didn't know how to stop and to be frank it felt a little good... like I was getting something out when I was yelling at them. Reading this book helped me to understand where those flashes of anger came from. I came by them honestly, just as my parents did. But my parents never bothered to learn how to control themselves. I am now doing MUCH better. When I get angry I clench my fists and yell silently at the sky, then deal with my children in a more subdued way. Sometimes i tell them I am feeling angry, but I no longer scare the pants off them. And I really credit reading this book.

Jef (the Adept) started out in life working on a trawler up to his neck in fish guts. But one day he bought occult books in a little book store specialising in magic. The books were based upon Western Hermetic Magic and they took him all the way to the first great Transformation:



      I was blissfully unaware of real transformation, until I was confronted by the
      first in July 1975.  It came when I least expected it, in a place I would least
      expect to meet the initiator; 11 AM in a crowded public marketplace.
      My sponsor knew it was about to happen, but was bound to keep me unaware.  
      His one concession to me out of friendship, was to ask that I wear a red cord
      tied around my solar plexus under my shirt that day.
      I did as he requested.
      The experience was so trying that I lay sick for three days, part of me in this  
      world and part of me in another place. During those three days, I dreamed the   
      same dream over and over. To this day, I'm not at all sure if it was a dream.
      When I came back to myself, my power had increased a thousandfold or more
      and I knew all I needed to know of the other two transformations, to set about
      working toward achieving each in its turn.



On and on Jef went pushing through light and dark- even on to the the second and yes astonishingly, even to the third great Transformation where:



     Something I have never bothered to mention is that the non-spatial continuum  
     may be manipulated in any way the fully transformed magician wills. The reason  
     I do not choose to do so is something of a paradox.
     The ability to manipulate time in order to serve the magician to his/her benefit  
     comes with the third Transformation. With the third transformation all reason for
     altering the continuum vanishes.
     My sponsor tried to teach me this many years ago: unfortunately, I was incapable  
     at that point of understanding, or appreciating the simple magic of concentric rings...



Jef went all the way, even to where visions of the forth great transformation and it's relationships began appearing in meditations:



     Wraith-like shadows, singing the coloured symbols I have yet to fully master,  
     float above, below, beside and through me, as though I am in a glorious waking
     dream.
     I now understand that the third Great Transformation is not a sudden change, but a  
     slower process. Nor is it magic, being something else entirely. The transformation  
     enables the magician to not only create and de-create across the four worlds of this
     universe, but also allows one to leave the alpha universes behind and begin anew
     in another existence entirely... if the initiate so desires.

A book at many levels

A nice book for anyone interested in the spiritual side of life. It is an initiatory text along the lines of Carlos Castanada's books. Meaning that reading it will open a channel to the worlds described which can be used or not as the reader wishes. The characters in the book bring out certain issues as well as a range of experiences that maybe useful to some practitioners of Bardon's works. There's a few titbits of practices as well as some description of the cosmology and theory of Bardon's works.

But it's not a 'how-to' book (Bardon created 3 extremely good books for this), it's not a supporting book, not a philosophical/theoretical book. I think other reviewers have it right when they say it is a motivational book but I feel it goes deeper than that. I'm happy to have it on my bookshelf expecting that I will pick it up at various times in the future and get something different out of it then as I have now.

Pure motivation

For those humans that have started to wake up and willfully accelerate their development, paths open up. For some people their accelerated path starts with meeting an individual opening their eyes into a hidden dimension of the "normal" world, others might get a special experience showing them something that shakes their worldview which in turn make them seriously and honestly look for stuff considered by others to be fairytales...

Those people need guidance into this new worldview and its possibilities, rules, dangers, does, don'ts, techniques and such. Some of them get in contact with an organization and/or a teacher. Some do not.

Franz Bardon wrote a set of progressive books for those people that did not and initially would not have a physical teacher. The first one is called Initiation Into Hermetics and was designed to surely and safely lead a student into higher understandings and faculties regarding magic...

Franz Bardon's system is effective but require discipline, hard work and brutal honesty with oneself - without a teacher guiding the student and tailoring the training for the student, special considerations need to be taken in order to not expose the student prematurely to potential dangerous practices. To put it bluntly: following Bardons system is NOT for the weak willed. It takes serious effort and dedication.

This solitary training put many off their path, losing motivation, getting sidetracked, getting some success, lacking other... hardship IS on the path of a Magician but just once in a while it would be nice to get a breather... get some extra light... someone to tell you it is worth it.

THAT extra breathing space, light, encouragement is what someone on the path, not only Franz Bardon's, get from this book. It is a work that motivates. It is told in a very low-key way, in almost a dialogue between a fledgling seeker and the accomplished Initiate. One can recognize the lost feeling in the seeker, yet the flame is still there, needing some kindling - and the Initiate enters the stage, very calmly, giving small pieces of information, raising the flame. The humbleness of the Initiate permeates his sentences and mixes beautifully with statements that others would think being the claims of megalomaniac schizophrenic.

Read it. It is refreshing.

A Magical Discourse

I wonder if you have ever met a real magician? No - not some trickster who by sleight of hand fools his audience. I mean someone capable of making physical magic via their will? No such thing I hear you say.... really?

Czech magician, Franz Bardon, was one person reputed to have developed such powers and I can recommend the autobiographical account of his life which was written by one of his close associates after his death in Brno. He could make real magic of that I have no doubts. Despite hanging in magical circles for close to a decade or so, I have never seen or met anyone capable of performing that kind of physical magic. I have never seen someone make it rain or make something burst into flames simply through an act of will. Do people like this exist? Yes, I am certain of it.

The author of this book, Marten Crawford and others, had some interaction through a discussion group several years ago with a real adept magician who had followed Bardon's exercises with real success. The interaction makes for remarkable reading and offers significant insights into what it takes to become an adept in real magic annotated throughout by the author.

The book is really a discussion - an interaction - that took place on this discussion board but it soon becomes a compelling read. I think this book works on two levels. First, for those interested in magic, it's a must read as the interaction with the magician reveals some very significant insights, second, for those who are just interested in a good read, this book will also appeal as the fascination builds around the magician and his activities.

I really enjoyed this book and was rather disappointed when it came to an end. I think you will like it too.

Nice Book with self tests

A very nice book for teenagers facing problems with Bullies and bad behaviors.It has self tests inside, the language beign used is simple and can be easily understood.Some might find it extremely helpfull on tecnhiques for facing anger issues, fear, anxiety and deppression from bulling or bad behavior of others.In general i consider it a valuable tool for my Job as a counsellor.

Probably a great book in the UK. Useless in US.

I had to return this book-- something I almost never do. Usually I just pass them on. But this book is written for a pre-teen or young teen who lives in the UK. It is full of terms and slang that would be a mystery to a US child. It also recommends an action (hitting back if hit in school) that could get you suspended in the US, but is apparently considered acceptable in the UK. Don't buy for a US child!

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Ok, before I talk about the book I feel I must share something. I just returned from a full weekend conference given by Hayhouse where their most prominent authors gave lectures, usually about two hours long. All of them write in the self-improvement or new age genres and so all of them were inspiring and uplifting. The thing is, there was SO much information given to me at one time...and so much of it would slightly contradict what the previous author had said...that I left unsure how much I had even absorbed. It wasn't until I returned home that "The Power" popped back into my head and that's when I realized just how valuable a book it really is.

"The Secret" absolutely talks about our feelings being even more significant than our thoughts or words when it comes to attracting the experiences we want. It's in "The Power", though that this is examined even further. For those who don't know, this "power" the author refers to is love :)

When I first picked up the book, I scoffed. You see, I had read and watched "The Secret" years ago when it first came out (ok, I think it was like five years ago...let's not be that dramatic). And while I absolutely loved it, I didn't experience the best results. I also started getting tired of constantly affirming and focusing on manifestion...it just became exhausting. So when I stumbled upon this new book in B&N (sorry Amazon), I thought, "well, here we go again." So I turned to a random page...and forever whatever reason, I was hooked.

I don't know why I didn't understand the whole "feeling" portion of "The Secret" because they DO absolutey cover it...but "The Power" really drills this into your mind. What I love about this book is that the author keeps the concepts very simple and then uses the bulk of the book to give you examples that I personally found incredibly inspiring. The basic concept is that everything in the Universe is either positive or negative...love or lack of love...light or dark. If you want to attract more positive things than negative things, all you have to do is tip the scale of your FEELINGS more to the positive side than the negative side. That's it! (and for anybody who just thought, "what do you mean THAT's IT"...careful...because that's negative ;)

Feelings are REALLY important when working with manifestation and I will tell you why. No matter what it is you want or desire...I really don't care what it is...the ONLY reason that you want to bring that into your life is because you believe you will FEEL better once you have it. Period and end of story. The heart is a huge magnet in the body and the frequency it sends out is POWERFUL!!! So if you want those things that will bring you happiness tomorrow, you must think of them from a loving, joyful place TODAY!!!

Better yet, you don't even have to "manifest" things, per say. Instead, you can simply practice falling in love with everything that is around you NOW. When you see something you love, you can feel happiness deep within your heart for that moment and then let it go. Just don't be surprised if that certain something keeps showing up in your life ;) The bottom line is that whatever emotion starts your day will most likely snowball and that's the emotion that will attract the experience you refer to as your future. So even if you aren't working on manifesting specific things, you can instead use the concepts taught in "The Power" simply to discipline yourself into attracting happier experiences, in general. Interestingly enough, some of the most successful people in this world didn't start out saying they wanted to be famous or make a million dollars. Instead, they just went about life with an open heart and asked themselves how they could help other people be happy. So keeping your heart open and acting from love can STILL bring you the things many people dream about, but without obsessing about manifestion.

One concept that I LOVE in this book is that it's impossible to feel bad in the exact moment you are having a good thought. When I first read this I laughed and rolled my eyes and then made a sincere effort to prove the author wrong...and I couldn't do it!!! The moment I could make myself feel bad, I had already changed my good thought into a bad one. So I continued the experiment the next day and you would have been amazed if you saw what happened. Literally one amazing and happy event and interaction with people was followed by another and another and another! A presentation that I had been anxious about the day before went WAY better than I could have EVER anticipated. My teachers (I was in a yoga teacher training) had given literally everybody else notes and yet after I gave my teaching presentation (after hours of ONLY thinking positive thoughts) they said, "wow...that was GREAT...um, we really don't have any notes for you at all." As I was smiling ear to ear, another student said, "well, nobody's going to want to go after THAT." (and mind you, there was nothing out of the ordinary spectacular about the presentation other than my heart was wide open both before and during!)

As far as criticism is concerned...well, this book is about love and the power behind it. So really, the people who criticize it are simply proving the concepts of the book to be true. If you think, "this book is stupid...all these books are the same....what a bunch of fluff...you've got to be kidding me..." well, all of those thoughts are followed with negative feelings and so people who think and FEEL that will be attracting plenty of negative experiences, hence writing a negative review. So in my experience, it couldn't be a problem with the book but rather how disciplined the reader is in applying the concepts CONSISTENTLY in their daily life. Are they really starting their day with meditation and getting in the most amazing, joyful state before starting their day? When they visualize their dreams are they just seeing pictures or are they adding the emotions on top of the pictures? If something unexpected happens...traffic jam, spilled coffee, long line at the grocery store (all a result of PAST feelings, by the way)...are they able to stay either neutral...or better yet, positive despite what is in front of their eyes?

It does take discipline to apply the principles in the book, but the GREAT news is that it feels AMAZING at the same time! Why? Because LOVE feels AMAZING!!! As "A Course in Miracles" says: everything in the Universe is either an Act of Love or a Call for Love. When you learn to make everything you do an act of love, you will attract more and more of it into your life, in ways you could least expect :)

I recommend this book SOOOOO highly (I mean, clearly)!!! And while I love all of the other authors out there and think that it's great to hear many differnt perspectives, the bottom line is that love is truly what makes the world go round. So if you want to read a million books, make sure this is one of them. And if you only want to read one book this holiday season, buy "The Power"!!!!

YOU ARE GOING TO BE SHOCKED

If you just give it a try and follow easy instructions, your life will never ever be the same again. In fact , after you read, you will not recognize your self. You will get your health back. Your goals done and never ever struggle with anything again. It will show you step by step instructions for 28 days . After you done, you will just want to make it part of your life. If it seems to good to be true, just give it a shot and I can assure you will not regret . Worth every penny your are going to invest. I bought a few hundreds of books and read a lot. But it is the first time I am leaving feedback. Thanks for your invaluable time for reading my review.

I have read all of Rhonda Byrne's books and I Love this book the most. When I finished it I couldn't wait to read it again (which I am currently doing). I have always been a "feelings" type of person. In everything I do I have a "feeling" associated w/it. I couldn't watch Simple things like some reality TV because it made me feel uneasy and bad. I would cry on cartoons and even commercials because I was so happy or I could "feel" the love. So I just labeled myself as sensitive. But reading the Power has helped me to understand, harness and use all of those "feelings" to better my life through gratitude and love. I am one of those people who believe in fairytales and wants everything to be glitter, sprinkles and roses, but of course when you listen to society you conform and believe that this kind of bliss isn't realistic! After reading The Power I have my fairy tale back. I can't stop smiling. So many things have manifested and for me, or turned into a positive situation. Also this book and the others line up with the Bible and actually helped me to understand and apply Gods word and even better! Afterall, Gods number one command is Love and that is what this book is all about!
