Beginning implies Beginner.

I rarely write book reviews. This one I'm going to.
(I'm using the Kindle version)
Couple issues:
1. The word 'Beginning' would suggest to me it is a book for 'Beginners'. That is not the case here.
2. The author clearly has a background in ASP.NET (i.e. prior to MVC) and repeatedly compares how things were/are in ASP.NET versus how they are in ASP.NET MVC....This is useful if you are familiar with ASP.NET (but what if you aren't?). Again the title of the book suggests it is for 'Beginners', but the author assumes you understand ASP.NET (to some degree) when making these comparisons.
3. Others have pointed out the tutorials have gaps and are inconsistent. I agree completely. Let me provide a specific example:
Chapter 6:
-I am happily reading along when the book tells me to add a 'method' to my 'PetController class' from Chapter 4. Ok? Except that you never explicitly told me to make the PetController class in chapter 4 (though admittedly going back, the book had hinted at it).
-Then i'm asked to create a new 'view' called PictureUpload. Ok? Where do I put it? How do I make it?...It says use a strongly typed view referencing 'PictureModel'. What's PictureModel? We haven't discussed nor created it. I'm familiar with the Models in this book's application because they were explained...but what the eff is PictureModel? Maybe I missed something?...
4. I learn by examples. Examples. Examples. Take me through a bunch of applications. Back to back. Let's build one after the other. Then I will see the patterns and understand.
My opinion is Matthew MacDonald should maybe have written this book. He has the ability to take these complicated concepts and TEACH them well through print.
In sum, perhaps the book should be called 'Familiarizing Yourself with ASP.NET MVC 4'. Because that is what it is. A book for people with some prior ASP.NET experience who want to get a little more comfy with ASP.NET MVC 4. If you are a true 100% beginner, look elsewhere.

How did this get published?

I was recommended this book on the basis that the previous version (for MVC 3) was apparently good. I now know that they are under different authors, and apparently this has made an enormous difference in quality.
This book is reasonable for beginners up to about chapter 6. In the beginning of the book you are given the distinct impression that you will be coding along with the book, with a resulting complete application once you complete it.
This is false, by the middle of chapter 6 the book spirals into complete chaos, you aren't directed clearly where certain code goes, simple instructions and rendered HTML code are taking up huge amounts of space on the precious little pages in this book, you realize that you can't even compile your code because the author doesn't feel the need to tell you that what your coding has dependency that is either never coded or coded at some point later in the book.
What you end up with is being halfway through the book, disappointing with your purchase and so lost that your resorting to copy pasting his completed files into your project, making the whole of using this book pointless.
Do not buy this book, do not recommend it to a friend. This book is not for beginners, it is for no one. Not a single person could get something out of this book that wouldn't have a greater yield from a different source. This guy should never write again.
If I could give it a zero I still wouldn't be happy, I would only be happy if they somehow compensated me for the price of the book and time I wasted on it.

It's unclear how this book made it to print. It clearly hasn't been edited or reviewed for technical accuracy. The author clearly says he is going to walk us through building a complete application from the ground up. That makes him a lying liarpants.
As soon as you get to chapter 4 where you start adding code to the application, things get real confusing real quick. He never actually tells you to add anything, he simply discusses some code listings. Even if you assume all the code listings are supposed to be added, he doesn't tell you where to add them. Even if you figure out where they go in the controller, I hope you already know how to add the controller to the project, because he doesn't tell you how to do that! That's ok, because I've been programming for decades and I figured out how to add the controller. Wait, in the listing he gave us the action method was called NotFoundError, but later he is referencing it as NotFound. There are lots of inferred suffixes in identifiers in MVC, making it even harder to decipher if this is on purpose and just the MVC way (Hint: it wasn't). What an S-Show.
The action methods listed in chapter 4 also have code dependencies that haven't even been written yet! For instance, in the "Display" there is a line referencing PetManagement, which doesn't exist yet!
Forget about the beginner, this book would be impossible to use for ANYONE, because it's simply not finished.
