A modern memoir (not so different from the old memoirs)

I have read many memoirs of physician-surgeons, from the classics of walking the wards of the early 1820s to the modern classics of this generation of tyros! I as a disclaimer am an orthopedic physician, who graduated from the author's medical school WAYNE STATE, approxiiamately 10 years after Dr Schultz, I was told of the book by his granddaughter with whom I shared a international medical mission expierence recently. I found the exploits described fascinating and in the context of my medical life expierence totally believable. A non medical reader not aware of recent medical advances might be put off by some of the facts of political realities, social realities, family realities described in this book. I found it a quick interesting read with many of the same questions I would like to have answered, early life, medical school, why he choose his place of residency? All memoirs suffer from a missing chapter describing the wife's perpictive! This is a good rebelling of medicine in the 1960s /2000 Period, with many question left unexplored. I would recommend this memoir to anybody interested in a surgeon's fascinating life, blessed by fate, good health and a strong wife!

A fascinating read

A well written and beautifully illustrated account of a Plastic Surgeon's adventurous career. Along with his involvement with the CIA and the Chicago underworld, he relates some of his life threatening professional activities in India and East Africa. He writes of how he overcame multiple serious encounters in communist countries before the breakup of the Soviet empire. Describing some of his foreign adventures with hysterical humorous antidote's makes for an easy read.

Facinating Experiences

After being with Dr. Schultz on foreign surgical missions and many weeks of sailing with him on his sail boat, The Loon, I knew some of his accomplishments. Never did I realize the richness of his professional life until his book. A fascinating read for most every one. Gerald Nelson MD
