Bud McClure has written a very curious book. In some ways, what he produced is a compendium-in-brief or a wide world of information. He writes of chaos theory, including a run past 'a three-stage model of science.' He recounts theories of physics and arrives at 'the mathematics of dynamics which forms one of the cornerstones of chaos and self-organizational theories.' He takes us through Dynamics, principally nonlinear dynamics, and attractors, and strange attractors; chaos terminology, including dissipative structures, the Butterfly effect, fractals, bifurcation, Slime Mold, Phase-Locking or Entrainment, and the Beluzov-Zhabotinski Reaction. Along the way, we pass at least one theory of evolution (Arthur Young's), and toruses, and Koch's snowflake. And that's only the first 15 pages! Make no mistake, this is fascinating stuff.

A radical and innovative look at group dynamics

Putting a New Spin on Groups is one of the most original books I have read on small group behavior. The author's application of chaos theory to small group development harkens me back to Kurt Lewin's innovative work with groups. Adaptation of Arthur Young's work in creating a model of group development is also very innovative. I was especially pleased to see uncommon topics covered in this book such as women in leadership roles, group metaphors, and regressive groups. The chapter on the transpersonal and spiritual aspects of groups was new to me and alone worth the purchase of this book. Anyone working with groups or involved in a group or business organization would come away from reading this book with radically different ideas about group dynamics. It's definitely a winner!

A very original and creative look at group development

This was a real eye-opener for me. It forever changed this way I look at group development. The author's use of chaos theory was well reasoned and the ample examples made it very understandable. I love the chapter on the spiritual aspects of groups. One of the strongest parts of the book were the chapters on leading groups. The chapter on how groups change and grow was also exceptional. After reading this book much of my intuition about how groups develop, grow, and change was confirmed. I wish I had read this book in graduate school.
