Review

Not ones to keep secrets, Rosen, the grandson of Junior's founder, and Allen (Junior's Cheesecake Cookbook) start with the recipe that has been the backbone of Junior's success, the New York Cheesecake. They present a nice collection of recipes accompanied by historical and anecdotal sidebars that do not distract. If there are any surprises here it is the inclusion of a small group of soda fountain desserts, including egg creams, freezes, shakes, malts, and sundaes. The bulk of the recipes are mostly standards of the restaurant: tall cakes, down-homey pies, cupcakes, and tarts and cookies. The authors even reach into the archives of Junior's first menu and include a recipe for Nesselrode Whipped Cream Pie, a rum custard pie, largely absent from contemporary menus.
Verdict There is a definite New York influence here, seen in egg creams, rugelach, and desserts inspired by black-and-white cookies; however, with a troubleshooting section and baking hints along the way, this book could easily be used as a resource for standard desserts. The recipes are too good to pass up. —Library Journal

Yum, I love cheesecake!
By Shala Kerrigan
Junior's is well known for their cheesecakes, which are considered by many to be the best in the world. Located in Brooklyn, it's a must-go for lots of visitors to New York.

So if you're a cheesecake lover, you're going to be thrilled they have a cookbook now, and the book does start with some great cheesecake recipes. Classic New York style to start with, then getting into more complicated cheesecakes. Personally I had to wipe up a little drool after just reading the recipe for the Red Velvet Cheesecake which is a "skyscraper" style cake, 5 inches tall with cake, cheesecake and cream cheese icing. The tiramisu charlotte is a new favorite for my family.

After the cheesecake recipes comes a chapter on soda fountain desserts. Perfect egg creams, orange freeze drinks, milkshakes, malted and ice cream treats. As much as I love cheesecake, this is my favorite chapter. My family loves ice cream, I'm pretty sure if you asked my dad, he would say it's favorite food. This is the chapter for hot sunny days.

Black and Whites covers two-tone desserts that are stylish and tasty. Cheesecakes, cookies, malteds and a couple other recipes. The Oreo Little Fellows look like the perfect cool dessert for my daughter's July birthday.

Layer Cakes and Cupcakes is self explanatory and full of wonderful baked goods. My favorite in this chapter is Grandma's Lemon Loaf. It's plain looking compared to the rest of the desserts, but I love loaf cakes.

Pie Shoppe has whipped cream pies, adorable tartlets and classic pie recipes. Recommended- the Bourbon Sweet Potato Pie.

Save Room For Dessert has recipes that don't fit into the rest of the chapters like blintzes, brownies, cookies and pudding. It even includes a recipe for fried cheesecake.

For Those Watching Their Sugar is where this book becomes very much a favorite for me. I don't have to watch mine, but my uncle is diabetic and I like making him a special treat every so often. With several cheesecake recipes, a muffin recipe and a couple mousse recipes, this one will keep him happy for years.

The last chapter contains instructions for things that are used in several recipes. Crusts, sauces, whipped cream and ganache.

The instructions for the recipes are clear and well written, and there are bits of trivia and tips sprinkled liberally through out the book. The photos are incredible.

[I received a complimentary copy of the book to review on my craft blog- Don't Eat the Paste. My reviews are always my honest opinion]

Good recipes and great tips
By Succotash
Junior's restaurants in New York are known for great food and delicious cheesecakes. Junior's Dessert Cookbook contains 75 recipes including their famous cheesecakes, layered cakes, and pies. The chapter on the basics includes sauces, buttercreams, and decorations for the different desserts. And if you become stuck or there is a problem with the baked items, the table at the back of the book lists probable causes and how to fix it next time around.

Chapters include recipes for all their favorites: Junior's Famous Cheesecakes; Fabulous Soda Fountain Desserts; Black & White; Junior's Layer Cakes and Cupcakes; Junior's Pie Shoppe; Save Room for Dessert; For Those Watching Their Sugar; Baker's Basics; What to Do If Your Dessert Is Not Perfect; and Metric Equivalents.

All in all, a good dessert cookbook. Their cheesecakes are the main draw to their menus, and the recipes for them deliver. The recipes stress using quality ingredients, and the many tips encourage successful baking.

Diner style food - trusted recipes

I have 3 of the Junior's cookbooks and I have yet to be disappointed in any recipe. Even when I exchange healthier ingredients among those indicated, I get a good outcome. Some of these recipes have been adopted as our 'go to' recipes for family events.

The Invisible College: What a Group of Scientists Has Discovered about UFO Influence on the Human Race, by Jacques Vallee

What is the nature of unidentified aerial phenomena? Forty years ago a small cadre of dedicated researchers began actively investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, and exchanging data through a small, informal network of international contacts. Today this low-profile network, or "invisible college," has grown into a larger, multi-nation volunteer research effort joined by many individuals. But the questions first raised 40 years ago remain current-and unanswered.

"I believe that a powerful force has influenced the human race in the past and is again influencing it now. Does this force represent alien intervention, or does it originate entirely within human consciousness? This is the question that forms the basis of the work of the Invisible College of UFO researchers." -- Jacques Vallee

"THE INVISIBLE COLLEGE is unlike any other UFO book ever written. Dr. Vallee questions what everybody else takes for granted, doubts what everybody believes, drenches us with data that doesn't 'fit' any of the theories of either the True Believers or the die-hard non-believers and then offers a hypothesis on his own." -- Robert Anton Wilson

"An important book-not only are UFOs and psychic events inextricably linked, as Dr. Vallee so nicely points out, but neither can be understood without an appreciation of the role of myth, tradition, and belief system. Must reading for the serious student of contemporary events." -- Edgar Mitchell

"Certainly one of the most interesting, thought-provoking books so far written on UFOs." -- Colin Wilson

Dr. Jacques Vallee began his professional life as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in 1961. While on the staff of the French Space Committee, he witnessed the destruction of the tracking tapes of unknown objects orbiting the earth, initiating a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon. Vallee arrived in the U.S. in 1962 and worked in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin before receiving a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University in 1967. There he became a close associate of J. Allen Hynek, then scientific consultant for the U.S. Air Force on Project Blue Book-the result was The Invisible College. Dr. Vallee is presently a venture capitalist living in San Francisco. His website is www.jacquesvallee.com.

Unique thesis, a little fluff
By bhangonoveloctresidom
Vallee's precious contribution to UFO research is his agnosticism and ability to see a third option: UFO's may not be physical "aliens", but they may also defy classification as pure psychological anomalies. So what are they? Vallee presents a fresh possibility.
The only reason I don't give The Invisible College 5 stars is the excess number of UFO cases documented. Granted, they may have been more necessary in 1975, when the book was published, but I doubt it. Most of us had been indoctrinated into the typical variations of UFOlogy by 1960 - but Vallee does retell the cases with clarity and intelligence.

From Magonia to "Control System", Vallee's evolving ideas move from the bizarre to the incredible
By The Guardian
Published in 1975, `The Invisible College: What a Group of Scientists has Discovered About UFO Influences on the Human Race' (the full title) was Jacques Vallee's fourth work on the puzzling UFO/contactee phenomena. Here he first put forward his idea that these phenomena were some kind of `control system' on human consciousness. Vallee is highly intelligent, his ideas are often interesting and he has a reputation for thinking out-of-the-box (he refers to himself as "a heretic among heretics"), but whether he ultimately offers any meaningful answers to this persistent set of phenomena is debatable. Many read Vallee's books and find his ideas hard to accept simply because they do not explain the evidence nor offer any credible, sustainable hypothesis.

The name `The Invisible College' was first used in the 1500s by early rationalist scientists who co-operated covertly to avoid the attentions of the Church, the then-controlling ideology, and (Vallee tells us) was resurrected by late 20th century scientists again confronted by a similar controlling ideology: that UFO and related phenomena do not exist and deserve no consideration. This latter-day Invisible College reportedly shared data and ideas about the UFO phenomenon in secret in order not to jeopardise their careers in the prevailing restrictive ideological climate. Where once people were burned at the stake, now they are merely ridiculed and ostracised for daring to be rational and open-minded.

The book's long title however is slightly misleading, as the content is not really about `what a group of scientists has discovered about UFO influences on the human race' but, rather, what Jacques Vallee personally thought about this subject in 1975. The text does not confine itself to UFO phenomena per se but embraces religious miracles, visions, ancient Phoenician symbolism, revelatory messages received through channelling and automatic writing, telekinesis and a range of other psychic phenomena which the author sees as interrelated.

Jacques can be tough going at times. In the introduction, he lays out his methodology:

"In this book I will not confine myself to the examination of the physical reality, but will step...to the experiential and even to the mythical. I will approach this enquiry within the framework of descriptive phenomenology..."

There is merit in frequently heard criticisms that TIC repeats cases detailed in the author's previous book, `Passport to Magonia.' However, TIC is not the same book as PTM but puts forward a different (and somewhat more `out there') hypothesis.

The basic argument of TIC, in a nutshell, is that UFOs and the associated phenomena which surround them cause changes in the life-attitudes of percipients. The phenomenon is without question a nuts-and-bolts reality with INTENDED psychological and physical characteristics. Physical effects on the environment serve to reinforce to the percipient that his encounter was real: such effects are more important than proving to third party investigators that something physical occurred. Vallee puts forward the thesis that these phenomena are possibly not due to extraterrestrial visitation but are collectively a kind of deliberate control system, like the heating thermostat in a house, designed to adjust perceptions in the human race and challenge existing societal thought paradigms. This control system, according to Vallee, operates by introducing elements of absurdity and dislocation from normal consensus reality as tools to move percipients into a new expanded consciousness. The ridiculous/absurd nature of many encounters keeps most scientists away from the evidence, as they are in thrall to current strait-jacket thinking and will not step over the boundary into unknown territory, and again this element is somehow intended by the agency controlling the phenomenon. Yeah, weird.

So Vallee goes beyond discussing if these phenomena are `real' to focus primarily on the effect encounters have on percipients. Of primary interest is the psychological impact of the phenomenon on, for example, French astronomers who Vallee witnessed being confronted by UFOs right in front of their eyes:

"Instead of asking whether these seemingly manoeuvrable and `impossible' objects could be a manifestation of some advanced technology (which may even have been terrestrial in origin) they thought only of suppressing...of denying every observation...and by destroying the data when it was demonstrated to them that no airplane could have behaved as the objects did...my interest in UFOs has gone through several phases during this period, but my curiosity about the behaviour of scientists who destroy, distort or simply ignore the very facts they are supposed to investigate has never been satisfied..."

Vallee takes it for granted that any intelligent reader who has done diligent investigation for himself will recognise that these phenomena are objectively real and physical. He is more interested in exploring how the encounter causes percipients to think and behave, and why. To Vallee, these effects are a planned and intentional product of the phenomenon; its `raison d'etre,' not unintended side-effects. To support his thesis he details various persistent paranormal events resistant to all prosaic explanations: the extraordinary abilities of UFO contactee Uri Geller whose telepathic and telekinetic abilities he tested; the series of `miracles' tied up with prophecy at Fatima in Portugal; the extraordinary UMMO phenomenon in Europe, generally regarded as an elaborate hoax but for which Vallee offers an alternative explanation. In TIC he begins to examine cases of those allegedly touched significantly by his hidden `control system' and who subsequently come to believe they have been given a special mission from on high: Joan of Arc and Mormon-founder Joseph Smith were essentially influenced by the same phenomenon as leaders of the new `space brother' UFO cults which form the focus his next book, `Messengers of Deception.' Credit to Vallee for getting out there and investigating encounters, claims and cult-like groups in person: he is no armchair theorist.

In evaluating Vallee's control system hypothesis, the obvious questions are: who or what is in charge and managing it? If something non-human, then what? Where is the real evidence for this idea, other than that some of Vallee's carefully selected cases can be made (with difficulty) to force-fit the theory? Most people care little about UFOs and have no interest in the subject, so how does this theory stand up? If some kind of inter-dimensional control system it seems pointless, futile, a failure. The reader should make up his own mind, and follow through the arguments expanded in Vallee's subsequent works `Messengers of Deception' (1979) and the `Dimensions' trilogy (1988-91).

Vallee has a literate if rather formal writing style. His books are not light reading but occasional gentle humour can be found if you search for it amongst the earnest flowing prose.

TIC is worth reading even if only to make you think in new ways about all this stuff, and appreciate how wild can be some ideas to try to explain it. For its clearly up-a-blind-alley-with-no-way-out hypothesis TIC rates no more than 3 stars, but given the benefit of the doubt due to the originality of the material it deserves 4. Good hardcover copies are hard to find, and not cheap: like `Anatomy of a Phenomenon' and `Passport to Magonia' there has been no latter-day reprint, and you'll need to find an original, so be prepared to pay real money for it.

An out of print masterpiece
By J. Burkes
Dr. Jacques Valle's " Invisisible College" is an amazing analysis of the UFO phenomenon. True to his scientific credentials he refuses to unquestionably embrace the ET hypothesis and instead focuses on the mechanisms of how the unseen intelligence behind the UFO interacts with human subjects and influences society despite attempts by both mainstream science and governmental authorities to deny the importance of what has been going on. Dr. Valle, John Keel and more recently Graham Hancock with the publication of his "Supernatural" have done an enormous service to mankind by revealing the link between the UFOs and all the other belief systems of this "haunted planet."

The Story Behind the Story: 26 Stories

In a splendid display of show-and-tell, 26 writers tell a story and lift the curtain to reveal how they did it.

This big, beautiful anthology of short fiction is for readers, writers, and anyone curious about the mysterious processes of literary minds. All contributors have been recent faculty members of the prestigious Warren Wilson Low Residency Program, including such literary favorites as Margot Livesey, Charles Baxter, Robert Boswell, Jim Shepard, Antonya Nelson, David Shields, and the editors themselves.

Each writer was asked to submit an original story, accompanied by an essay describing the challenges of the story and how they were met. Since writers resist herding, the editors were happily surprised by the wide range of essays―"fiction writers, when given the space, think about their work very differently." We learn about the genesis of a story, how story evolves, what was eventually relinquished and why, and how a story―surprisingly―might "insist" on changing.

Arranged alphabetically by author, and beginning with Richard Russo's cogent introduction, this volume is a treasure throughout.

From Publishers Weekly
Though students of literature or writing are often told to stick to the text-to avoid guessing at authorial intention and process-the dictum doesn't squelch their curiosity. Fledgling writers, especially, wonder how the pros get the job done, where they find their inspiration and how they can tap into those creative wells. This rich anthology, which offers shrewd insight into writers' approaches-thereby sating our desires for their secrets while validating our own eccentric quirks-reassures all lovers of good writing that there is no one correct way to craft a good tale. The contributors, all recent faculty members at the Warren Wilson Program for Writers in Swannanoa, N.C., offer model short stories followed by informal mini-essays on how they came to fruition. Antonya Nelson credits the seedling of "Strike Anywhere" to a student; Jim Shepard owes much of the title story from his new collection, Love and Hydrogen, to a flurry of research; while Tracey Daugherty cagily tips his hat to both imagination and autobiography, admitting only of his story, "City Codes," "it's all true except for the parts I made up." Writers' experiences couldn't be more different, with Robert Cohen "cackling" his way through the feverish high-speed ride of composing "The Varieties of Romantic Experience," while Ehud Havazelet took years to pen "Pillar of Fire." By sharing their stories as well as their struggles, their risk-taking and rule-breaking (Charles Baxter claims to have "violated most of the narrative norms" he tries to instill in his own students), these authors remind us that writing is a messy, fascinating and highly individualized process. This collection is a treasure trove of literary encouragement and wisdom.

From Booklist
Warren Wilson College's unique MFA writing program has counted among its faculty some of the finest contemporary American writers. In this welcome collection, 26 writers contribute a short story, followed by revealing personal commentary that offers insight into, as David Shields writes, "the secret (now not so secret) nerve-centers of the story." Many of the stories are a departure in style or content from the authors' best-known works: "inspired by students, and unlike any story I've written," says Antonya Nelson about her piece. In their personal essays, the writers speak both with authority and with vulnerability about their struggles, fragile moments of inspiration, and the help that they, too, receive from other writers. Perhaps most affecting is the authors' deep, affectionate faith in the stories that defy common writing wisdom: "Any writing workshop would hammer it to bits," Charles Baxter says of his selection. Intimate and instructive, this is a collection for anyone who cares about contemporary short fiction. Gillian Engberg

Best Short Story Anthology Ever
By Marcianne Miller
The Story Behind the Story is the first collection of short stories I greeted with a whoop of joy.
The more you enjoy reading a particular short story, the more you want to know about the writer. How different is the writer from me? you wonder. How did the writer actually write the story?
Answers are hard to come by. If you're lucky, you'll find a measly author min-bio buried in the small print. Anthologies are the worst: one good story after another raises your curiosity, but lack of additional information leaves you deflated.
Complain no more. The Story Behind the Story is exactly what the title promises: a collection of masterfully written contemporary short stories, each partnered with a fascinating essay revealing the creative process behind the story.
The stories are by 26 writers who have taught in Warren Wilson College's famous MFA Program for Writers. The simple format (so beautifully basic you're astonished it really hasn't been done before) was created by the book's two editors, Peter Turchi (long-time director of the Writers program) and Andrea Barrett, winner of the 1996 National Book Award for her story collection, Ship Fever.
Subject matter and style are as wide-ranging and dissimilar as work from that many talented writers could be. There's an unhappy boy who eats matches. A deranged fascist who roams Venice. A kidnapped woman who buys a hat. A man who runs over a cat. The images are unforgettable: a wedding cake in the street, a door floating in a river, a pile of bones found in the snow.
Most of the stories are set in present day, with many of them telling the concerns of parents, such as Mrs. Dimbleby, Wilton Barnhardt's sympathetic portrait of a mother who's not sure how much she loves her snotty little daughter. A few are historical, such as Jim Shephard's haunting tale of male lovers aboard the doomed Hindenburg airship, appropriately entitled Love and Hydrogen. Absurd comedy reigns in Stephen Dobyns' Part of the Story, in which a clueless older woman is visited by the five grown children she gave up for adoption.
The range of voices makes a thrilling melting pot, for although they've taught at Warren Wilson, the writers come from all over the country. There's the bold poetic cadence of Michael Martone's The Moon Over Wapakoneta, the mesmerizing lyricism of Andrea Barrett's tale of lost love, Out There, and the "Mexicanized English" Karen Brennan uses in Sacha's Dog.
In each "story behind the story," the writers relate the source of their inspiration, what writing goals they tried to accomplish, and how the story evolved from idea to published page. The result is that each story/essay unit becomes a vivid "window on creativity," as Richard Russo (2002 Pulitzer Prize for his novel Empire Falls) comments in his inspiring introduction to the collection.
Readers always want to know how autobiographical a writer's stories are. About City Codes, his poignant story of a family's attempt to save a historic building, Tracy Daugherty writes, "It's all true except for the parts I made up."

Good, but in need of pruning
By Jonathan Carr
It is an interesting idea: a collection of stories, each followed by an essay by the author on that story. And there are several places in this collection where it works brilliantly. But like the other Warren Wilson book, "Bringing the Devil to his Knees: The Craft of Fiction and the Writing Life," this collection could benefit from some pruning.

I would of course begin my cutting at the introduction by Richard Russo. But that's just my personal beef.

Many of the stories in the collection lack urgency. They are good stories, written by good writers. But I suspect that they are also rejected stories, stories that, before this collection, never found their way into publication. When I started reading the book, I looked on the copyright page to see where the stories had previously appeared. There was no indication that any of the stories had ever been published. As I read, I was not surprised. The first three stories (Antonya Nelson, Margot Livesey, and David Shields) left me bewildered and just barely awake. The writer's essays on the creation of the stories held my interest--I was curious to read about their personal and professional struggles. But the stories themselves lulled along like a long French movie full of beautiful and sometimes dirty people involved with one another in ways I couldn't quite follow.

Then I hit Charles Baxter's "The Old Fascist in Retirement." I couldn't follow this story either, but it was fascinating, like an image poem or a fever dream. I had a feel for what was going on, and that was all I needed to stay tuned. And I could have been happy with the experience of it. But Baxter's essay on the story rescued the reading from forgettable experience, and lodged it in my literary memory. His essay gave that ephemeral story context. I had the historical reference along with phrases like stylistic halitosis and stale rotten breath of Modernism to rattle around. And the fact that Baxter admitted that "this is a one-time-only story" somehow comforted me and laid to rest some of my reservation, it opened me up farther still to the experience of the piece.

There are stories in the collection that read very much like the work of Richard Yates. And though I do not particularly care for them, I understand their appeal and take to heart people's observation that such stories, in their understated way, create a remarkable intimacy of character. In Joan Silber's essay on her short story, "My Shape," she makes a very Yates-ian character observation: "What haunted me in her account was the teacher's repeated question, `How much do you want it?' An ecstasy of sacrifice was asked of her, for the sake of a fairly frivolous goal she had no hope of attaining."

Wilton Barnhardt's "Mrs. Dimbleby" is another example of the Yates-ian story. In Bernhardt's essay on the story, he writes, "Increasingly, I've come to see that all the high drama in the world rests in our day-to-day chores, our routines with our loved ones, if we're conscious, if we're observant."

Most short stories dwell on the day-to-day, and that does not make them necessarily Yates like. And the idea of the observant man echoes Camus and Satre, and probibily others still. But there is a certain softness to the Yates story (and many of the stories in this collection), a sense of suburban haze and strip-mall predictability. The Yates story lacks the Carver menace, or the Mark Richard, Larry Brown, Kevin Canty grit and strangeness.

A few of the essays offer sound advice on craft. Ehud Havazelet writes: "a story's form needs to be organic, the shape it takes, all the elements of craft--point of view, theme, voice, plot--having to emerge from what the story slowly tells you it needs, not from an infatuation born in experience, or a neat idea, or a thematic that is way too cleaver by half."

Kevin McIvory's short story, "The People Who Own Pianos," and the essay that follows are great meditations on the importance of voice. In the work he goes so far as to exclude elements of theme and plot.

Other essays wrestle with the difficulties and dangers of autobiographical fiction. Not something I am too terribly concerned with, but it is a common theme in four or five essays.

And then there are some damn good stories. Pablo Medina's "Mortality" is magical. And the essay that follows is just as good as the story.

Peter Turchi's "Night, Truck, Two Lights Burning," is a damn good story. And though I found the mother's dramatic death (car crash) a bit heavy handed, his use of fluid time and memory and image, the way the structure of the story folds in upon itself, the way it spins reader expectations, the way it balances precariously on the edge of sentimentality is really very good.

But in the end, the book is too big. There are only a handful of stories and essays that are really worth reading. Out of more than four hundred and seventy pages, I'd recommend about a hundred.

An innovative resource and great fiction
By Luan Gaines
An innovative resource and great fiction
Ah, the writing life. We envision the author working compulsively, never satisfied, anxious to capture his ideas on paper before they disappear, a bottle of liquid inspiration and glass at hand. In the public imagination, the writer exists in some remote setting, isolated in his rarified world of complicated thoughts and clever phrases, perhaps a tragic and difficult personality. While there is cachet in such perceptions, writing actually involves a great deal of hard work. A story must be nurtured, carefully pruned from inception into the finished pages. Yet the writers in this anthology are distinctly human and accessible, certainly generous, stimulating the reader's imagination with their experiences.
In this anthology, a series of writers, all teachers on the faculty of Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers, have contributed twenty-six short stories, each followed by a section named "About the Story". Each About the Story details the author's creative process involved in his particular story, whether it be personal experience, an idea gleaned from research or a series of incidents that resulted in a tale to tell.
The pivotal question about writers: is this talent genetic or are these skills that can be learned? In his introduction, Richard Russo addresses the problem ambiguously: Writers are both the same and different than others, says Russo. Good writing cannot be readily taught, but those who want to write can learn to do it well. With authors as mentors, advising aspiring writers, they may master the needed skills. However, "artists seldom progress in a predictable, linear fashion". It is possible for a writer to be good before he is competent; clearly, craft and experience can turn a writer into an author.
Thanks to the generosity of these veteran authors, sharing their experience and guiding the apprentice through the necessary elements of the craft, this volume is especially valuable. The shared ideas and discussions on problem solving build an energy that inspires the novice writer to experiment with a variety of approaches and each new story provides an opportunity for discovery. Yet each author has his own method, his own path. Russo refers another phenomenon, "cross-fertilization": when the solution to the story pays off by suggesting yet another, or stimulating a thought process that leads to a completed story.
The contributing authors are some of the finest names in contemporary fiction, including Margaret Livesey, Charles Baxter, Judith Grossman, Stephen Dobyns, Pablo Medina and Andrea Barrett. The authors' generosity is extraordinary in this literary treasure. Setting the tone with the first story, Antonya Nelson's "Strike Anywhere", a student "gives" Nelson the story, which "hangs in her mind like a Christmas ornament", until it is born. And Nelson "gives" the story to the reader in this anthology.
A few lines from each "About the Story", or one specific author's thoughts may trigger that sudden recognition, a solution. Of inestimable value to readers, each author shares a piece of his art, a myriad of ideas, suggestions and inspiration. I have marked my favorites (so far) and keep The Story Behind the Story on my nightstand, a ready resource and a reminder of the personal nature of the process, lessons on the art of writing. Luan Gaines/ 2004.

Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life, by Jon Lee Anderson

Che Guevara was a dashing rebel whose epic dream was to end poverty and injustice in Latin America and the developing world through armed revolution.

Jon Lee Anderson traces Che's extraordinary life from his comfortable Argentine upbringing to the battlefields of the Cuban revolution, from the halls of power in Castro's government to his failed campaign in the Congo and his assassination in the Bolivian jungle.

Meticulously researched and full of exclusive information, this work illuminates as never before the mythic figure who embodied the high-water mark of revolutionary communism as a force in history.

An Important, but Rambling, Political Bio
By doomsdayer520
With a figure this inspirational and controversial, it's amazing that no authoritative biography appeared on Che Guevara until Anderson completed this one three decades after his death. Anderson has really delivered an impressive and strongly researched bio into this interesting character. We learn that Che had a comfortable middle-class upbringing in Argentina and even earned a medical degree, but ended up fighting for the world's downtrodden. He also had severe asthma but still managed to become a rugged jungle revolutionary. After traveling around Latin America he ended up in Cuba as Castro's right-hand man during the revolution. This episode in Che's career contributes to the main problem of this book however. More than half of the book is dedicated to the years just before and after Castro's seizure of power in 1959. Che certainly had a large part to play here, but his life story is lost in Anderson's coverage of Cuban events and politics during those years. Thus for a while the book is no longer a biography but a political history that is only somewhat related to the main subject. Apparently in his research on Che, Anderson unearthed so much information on the Cuban revolution that he wanted to use all of it, and accidentally wrote a second book on Cuban history and placed it in the middle of this one. This is still useful if you're interested in that topic, but as a result this book becomes far more rambling, long-winded, and unfocused than it should be.
On the other hand, in the rest of the book Anderson definitely succeeds in showing all sides of Che's personality, both good and bad. Like the best of biographers, Anderson doesn't judge his subject and lets the facts speak for themselves. And what we have is a highly contradictory character. Che was admirably committed to his beliefs, but this commitment was so strong that his beliefs became unyielding and dogmatic. He was an exceptional leader of men but a horrendous politician, so he earned fanatical devotion from his followers but alienated everyone else. He personified the fatal flaw of all Communists by professing a love for the vague mass called "The People," but when it came to individual persons he persecuted (and sometimes executed) anyone who didn't follow his beliefs to the letter. While he was certainly a key player in the Cuban revolution, and Castro couldn't have done the job without him, Che accomplished little after that as he tried to inspire revolutions around the world. He couldn't accept the fact that his pie-in-the-sky dream of uniting all the world's oppressed peoples couldn't possibly work in reality, both for logistical reasons and because of the differences in people's political beliefs. But Che certainly had plenty of charisma and devotion, and that is still a pretty good reason for him to be inspirational to this day. However, his legions of admirers may want to read this book and learn more about what he really did - and didn't - accomplish.

Balanced and thorough
By Jerry Brito
This is a very even-handed and thorough look at Che Guevara's life. As an anti-communist Cuban-American, I approached this book with skepticism, but ultimately thought it to be sound. John Lee Anderson is obviously sympathetic to Che, but how can you expect a biographer not to be. Additionally, I suspect that such sympathy is what allowed him access to previously unreleased documents held by the Cuban Council of State, as well as Che's widow. Anderson doesn't squander the opportunity and produces a scrupulous, yet eminently readable account. If you are looking to learn more about the Che--the good and the bad--this is undoubtedly where start.

Excellente
By Mr Bojangles
If you are looking for an excellent book on Che Guevara, this one is it. It has it all, from his parents and his birth to his death in 1967 and his eventual return to Cuba 30 years later.

This book is very descriptive and extremely in-depth, so expect more than a simple narrative. It is a big book, it will take a little while to read, but it is time well spent.

I believe this book was as 'neutral' as it could possibly be, considering the highly contentious intellectual atmosphere that surrounds academic discussion of Cuba and the Revolution. It does not gloss over the fact that Che executed people, both during and after the guerilla war. Similarly, the book does not avoid the obvious humanistic and loving episodes in the life of Ernesto Guevara de la Serna. For his neutrality and artful handling of such a complex historical figure, who lived his life against a backdrop of events still highly controversial today, I commend Mr. Anderson.

Before reading this book, Che was an icon to me: a heroic revolutionary with dreams of intercontinental liberation and universal justice.

After reading this book, Che the icon disappeared. He became, to quote his reputed last words, simply "a man."
