An Unfinished Work.

I have to go against the flow of most of the other reviewers of this book. I was rather pleased with "The Fred Factor" and looked forward to YOU DON'T NEED A TITLE TO BE A LEADER, but found this book to be somewhat of an "unfinished" work. Though the advice here is practical and good, the structure of book and the stories it contains at times just don't seem to come to a definite conclusion. For instance, Sanborn will tell of an individuals adversities, accomplishments, etc. and might end that particular story with, "John now works for a major corporation and is doing well." Okay, you got me interested in John's story, told about the adversities he faced and how he overcame those adversities, and that's how you end his story! Many times, throughout the book, I found instances that left me empty and in want of more information.

As previously stated, there is some sound advice here, such as midway through the book where Sanborn tells of his revelation in focusing on phone calls as opportunities rather than obligations. Sadly, however, this sort of sage advice is sparse.

In the end, this was a collection of semi-success stories that were quite readable, but for me, not as inspirational as they were surely intended. I came away with the feeling that the author needed some quick cash and threw together a book that would sell based upon the author's previous name recognition.

Leadership 101

Mark Sanborn's book defining the qualities of true leadership (with a small "l"), is a worthy effort. If it was his senior year thesis at Leadership University, he'd most likely get a straight A.

The information Sanborn packs in this little book is perhaps more valuable for a recent college grad or a junior executive somewhere; but not necessarily for a seasoned management veteran. Certainly, it helps to keep handy at all times; in preparation for a big meeting or to polish off an important memo.

However, if you're a senior executive somewhere and you don't already know this stuff; and most importantly, practice this stuff; consider yourself fortunate to have survived this long. In that case, you'd better read this book; the sooner the better.

We can all become leaders in our daily lives

I was intrigued by Mark Sanborn's latest book, YOU DON'T NEED
A TITLE TO BE A LEADER, in part because of the title . . . it had
been a concept that I had thought about, but had never realized that
it could be put into practice . . . and quite easily, too.

Sanborn contends that we can each be a leader in our daily
lives . . . though the use of real examples involving both people
and companies, he actually shows how this can be done . . . such
as in the auto industry:

* At any Toyota plant, every employee on the line has the authority
and responsibility to shut down the line at any time they feel
necessary. Quality control and problem solving aren't left to the titled
managers. A woman who spots a problem is expected to lead by
calling attention to it rather than allowing it to slip through and become
an imperfection on a dealer's lot or owner's driveway.

He also gives very concrete suggestions on how to bring about
change; for example, in ourselves:

* Reading outside your area of expertise, or outside your comfort
zone, can stimulate your thinking, whether that means picking up
an interesting new book or thumbing through a new issue of
a magazine.

And I also liked his useful advice on how to choose the best person
to shine your shoes:

* As he worked, I commented on the quality of the shoe shines
I had gotten in other airports, mentioning how difficult it was
to gauge the kind of shoe shine I would get in places I hadn't been
in before. He looked up at me with astonishment. "It's easy to tell if
you're going to get a good shine," he told me. "Just look at the shoes
of the guy giving the shine. If they ain't fine, walk on by." I glanced
at his shoes; they literally shone. They were a walking billboard
proclaiming his competence.

In addition, YOU DON'T NEED A TITLE TO BE A LEADER contained
many insightful quotes, including this one:

* Sometimes being "good" isn't aiming high enough. As Erwin McManus,
the pastor of Mosaic Church in Los Angeles, "We spend so much time
worrying about our kids being good-not breaking the rules, getting into
trouble, and basically behaving-that we often forget to invite them to
be great."

This is a short book, but it is one that will get you thinking--long beyond
the time that you put it down.

Bigger and Better

I've loved every installment in this series and Legacy is no different. Mr. Kellen takes everything I enjoyed in the previous books and expands it tenfold. From the relatively small and narrow focus of Elegy, Christopher pulls back the camera and gives us a taste of the world beyond in this novel length adventure.

The world is bigger, the battles are bigger, the lore is expanded and the scope of the story shifts from merely following D'Arden towards encompassing characters from the previous stories and sets the stage for some truly epic adventure and drama to come.

As an author Christopher has expanded his skills so greatly that this almost feels like its from a different writer. As much as I loved Elegy, there were a few clunky passages which are to be expected from a first time author. However Legacy is lean, mean and any rough edges seem to have been polished away.

I won't talk about the story because its well described in the item description. However I will say that some great battles, monsters and settings await in Legacy. I don't know how long he intends to continue this series but the story could go in a million different directions by its end. Legacy is another great installment in the adventures of D'Arden and I already eagerly await the next book. If you're a fan of fantasy, sword and sorcery or the works of other great indie authors like David Dalglish definitely pick this series up, its a blast.

Keeps getting better.

I've been eagerly awaiting this book since I finished Elegy (The Arbiter Codex) and heard that Mr. Kellen had a sequel in the works.

We pick up shortly after the last book left off, and Kellen doesn't give our heroes any chance to rest. Bigger problems abound. Actions sequences are gritty and even more epic. We find out more about the world, the history of the Arbiters, meet new characters, and some characters from the other Eisengoth stories, which I was VERY excited about.

The most impressive aspect of this book and Mr. Kellen's writing of it, is he wraps up everything very nicely. The book's major conflict stems from choices D'Ardan Tal make in book one, and each step of the way, the character's choices affect the outcome of the book. The most impressive part of this book is that, while it leaves things open to go in any number of directions for future books, it ties up all the problems and questions that arise from this book and the previous volume in the series. I see this so rarely in traditionally published fantasy, where it seems that editors are afraid to force the writers tie up the loose ends so they can make sure people will want to buy future books. I applaud Kellen for being able to tie up the plots and conflict central to this book while leaving us knowing that there is more, so much more to come.

As someone who is well versed in both traditional and Indie fantasy fiction, I do not think if this as an Indie/self-published book, or Christopher Kellen as an Indie writer; I consider Christopher Kellen one of fantasy's shining new stars. If you don't read him, you're missing out.

Even better than the first

Another strong book by Mr Kellen.

Elegy provides more information about the Arbiters and how the division between good and evil occurred. While the ending of this book seemed abrupt, I would still recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels. Have downloaded book 3 and can't wait to start reading.

Great addition to the topic

"The New Codependency" is the newest addition to the volume of work published by Melody Beattie. She was one of the first to identify codependency as a problem and provide information on the subject to a large audience of readers. The first book she wrote, "Codependent No More", was originally published in 1987. This book does not replace that one, it just expands on the topic and adds additional insight to the problem of codependency.

If you are new to the subject and just getting familiar with it, I would definitely recommend you start with "Codependent No More". After you are further along in your journey, this book makes a lot of sense but I don't think it is the right place to start. It really builds upon the concepts presented in the first book and there is a subtlety to it that is best appreciated after having done some work in this area already.

As in all her books, I need to sit with a highlighter and use it freely. I also dog ear pages as I go for quick reference back when I need to review. I read it straight through and then went back and took some of the quizzes offered which was really helpful. After reading it once, it is definitely not going back on the book shelf. There are a lot of activities outlined to do to help the reader address and access issues he/she is dealing with. It is almost as if there is a workbook contained within its pages. I will continue to use it as a reference/workbook for many months to come, I am sure.

Anyone who has identified themselves as a codependent (or is dealing with a codependent) will benefit greatly from this book. She conveys her message is a loving, caring way versus a list of "shoulds" which is exactly what a codependent needs. A couple of my favorite passages:

"We're giving to get. We give to get people to need us because we don't feel loveable. Caretaking attaches people to us, creating dependent relationships."

"Another communication problem is draining energy or power from someone under the guise of "talking." People may act like they want to have a conversation with us, but many people with codependency issues use conversation as a way to get us to take care of them."

The two books truly are the gold standard on this topic.

A helpful update of ideas

Presents a needed update on thinking regarding codependency. This book addressed many of the problems I've had with the concepts of "codependency" over the years. Activities and quizzes give reader a way to put ideas into action in their lives. Probably not for someone new to Melody Beattie's work or learning about codependency in general - start at the beginning with Codependent No More or the daily readers. A strong addition to Melody's library.

A new take on helpful ideas

I have always been a fan of Melody Beattie's work, and I have benefited enormously from it since the old days of Codependent No More. I have not been in a relationship with someone addicted, but I nevertheless recognized myself in the description of the Codependent. There were so many similarities: not being able to take care of myself, obsessing about other people, taking care of everyone's needs (apart from my own, that is), not having boundaries. I seemed to be a textbook codependent, except that I did not get involved with alcoholics. So I just went along with what she had to say and read several of her books.

The New Codependency is one of the best ones. It has all the usual qualities of her work:

*She uses an empowering tone: of course you can make it. And to be honest, when she describes her life of a former junkie, you cannot help thinking: well, if she managed to get out of this mess, Surely I can get out of mine.
*Her book is packed with examples. The fact of the matter is, I can see problems and solutions so much more easily when I read about someone else. Examples allow me to do that.
*There is a lot of practical, down to earth advice. I cannot count the number of books I've read which describe my dreadful problems, but then leave me there with a vague "well I guess you need therapy" chapter. I hate it. Don't talk to me about my issues if you are not able to offer one hint of advice on how to solve them.

In The New Codependency, Melody Beattie tackles important concepts she wrote about before (boundaries, taking care of oneself, deprivation, control...), but with a higher level of maturity . Because she does not go back to the basics, I would advise not to read this book without reading first her earlier work. If you have, then it provides additional hindsight and a wiser point of view.

There are also new ideas. She insists to de-stigmatize codependency, explaining that it is just "normal behaviours, plus", that it is just a stage of grief - and I must say I find this new idea really interesting. There is a chapter about nurturing that I liked - she did not write about it earlier because she did not know what it was. And there is a whole section about emotions that I found really useful - I am one of these folks who have difficulties simply feeling.

The Perfect Translation of the Old Testament and the New Testament

[Personally I own this Darton Longman and Todd publication of the JB. It is also called the JB: Popular Edition. To my knowledge it is exactly the same as the JB: Reader's Edition. Both finish at 1696 pages. I can tell you that this DLT publication has a dust jacket that comes off to reveal a deep blue hardcover with a gold color lettering on the spine)

No other bible can be compared to the quality and accuracy of The Jerusalem Bible (1966). It is approved for liturgical use in Europe by the Vatican. That makes it an official Catholic bible. With relaxations of the official church position on bible translations, Alexander Jones of Christ's College, Liverpool took the opportunity as an editor to guide a team of translators in an English language translation of the Holy Bible using a method already accomplished by the Dominican Biblical School in Jerusalem with their production of La Bible de J?rusalem (1956) in French, by means of Hebrew and Greek sources while bypassing the Latin Vulgate (the key reason why the Catholic Church thought long and hard about approving this process). Thus the English version of the JB is not French to English translation as some have erroneously suggested. Along with creating the JB the editors also historically researched each book of the bible, and prepared an introduction for most books along with creating sets of footnotes that would cross-reference the entire bible. The Old Testament sources are the Masoretic texts, with a critical inspection comparison using the Greek Septuagint (the LXX). Since the Dead Sea Scrolls mostly matched the LXX, the JB happens to be the most accurate rendition of the OT. It is even better than the Jewish Tanakh and the Masoretic texts themselves that are not always in line with the Dead Sea Scrolls. The critical combination of the LXX and the Masoretic texts produce a version of the Old Testament of the quality used by Jews and certainly the apostles, at the time of Christ. The inclusion of all the books of the OT, including the `controversial' books erroneously labelled the `apocrypha' by Martin Luther during the reformation, is made on the bases that they are in the LXX (200 BC), the Vulgate (400 AD) and that the removal of them from the OT is a post-crucifixion event by Jews at Jamnia (Council of Jamnia) in 90 AD, again by Martin Luther in the Luther's bible of 1534 before finally being removed altogether by Protestant book publishers between 1825-27 after the Edinburgh Committee of the British and Foreign Bible Society decided simply not to print them anymore. Only the Catholic Church has regarded them as Old Testament with the Dead Sea Scrolls confirming this position (and it is not as if anyone had the right to canonize any other version of the bible after the Catholic Church did it at the Third Council of Carthage in 397 AD). Here they are again, and yes they do include the Books of Maccabees with `prayers for the dead' in tact. The English writer J.R.R. Tolkien has his hand in the style of writing and we even have the insertion of the name "Yahweh" (I AM WHO I AM) for God in reading the Old Testament. The JB (1966) was written before the advent of inclusive language (something that the church believes alters the word of God) so we also have the added bonus of having this fantastic translation without the use of inclusive language. Since it is modern (note, not modernism) you can read it without having to study Shakespeare (as readers of the King James Bible would have to do, resulting in many doctrinal errors also) and come away with a fresh and accurate understanding of the Sacred Scriptures by only reading it once (slowly though I might add), still there is nothing like it in terms of quality, ease of use and correctness. Alexander Jones, who obviously had a firm understanding of what went wrong with other bible translations, has done what all others have failed to do. There are some very minor quibbles about its use of short text in some passages of the NT and so the JB was revised in 1985 by Henry Wansbrough and the new version was called The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) but was rejected by the Holy See for its use of inclusive language (still the NJB is an amazing bible, but not for liturgical use). Even though the publication of the NJB was not approved, the NJB was widely circulated and had an impact on the JB to the point of putting it out of print. However recent demand for the originally approved JB has brought it back into circulation again, only not without what might be considered a shortcoming. All versions of the JB are photocopies of the 1966 version and have not been typeset again. Don't be disappointed to find the odd photocopied hair appearing across the page. However this is only cribbing, the text still looks as good as most bibles, just not perfect, and the fact that the JB has never been typeset means that you can not get a digital version of the JB. You can only own it on the printed page. The fact that it is not in digital has its disadvantages for serious bible scholars who like to run word searches, but at the same time this means that the JB can only be read in the way it was presented, on the printed page, in a bound hardcover book, and this is precisely how the JB should be read, and precisely how sacred scripture should be presented. Also the numbering system seems to disappear at times within the text, but this is in fact a method used by Jones to keep the original flow of sacred scripture. Sometimes the chapter number system actually broke the text in places where it should not have been, a bad tradition continued today because of this numbering system. Thus you will be reading chapters in the JB only to discover a small 5 instead of a big 5 like the 4 before it and the 6 after it. This method keeps the original chapter breaks of the books of bible that have long been lost to the numbering system. You have never read a bible like this one before. Quite simply I would deeply consider shelving all other bibles that you have and also getting a NJB for any quick double-checks that need to be made. Citing from the JB shows that you have (1) Understood the acumen involved in its translation, (2) a desire to ensure that everyone who doesn't speak Shakespeare can comprehend you and the Word of God and (3) want to keep the Canon of books that Christ and the Apostles used that was canonized at the Third Council of Carthage. Reading the JB is a miracle in itself. Never has our Justification through Faith in Jesus Christ because his forgiveness for our Sins by way of the Cross and Resurrection of the Body been made so absolute in print.

Jerusalem Bible-Jr (Bible Jb) This is not the full version with notes and comments. Another edition could be cheaper and might have a more readable text. The text is photocopied and could be crisper and with a little larger font.

Great Expanded Bible in Tiny Print

I ordered this Bible after my daughter 'borrowed' mine. My Jerusalem Bible had come from her grandfather and there was a family connection. I know from that Bible that this edition includes the history of the Macabees and and a number of wonderful features. Unfortunately, the edition that I got, while delivered promptly and in excellent condition, has smaller print than I am used to. Library, computer, and genealogy work are hard on the eyes - an occupational hazard. Most of what I read is on Kindle when possible in order to have the larger print. The print in this edition is too small for me to read. I will most likely have to trade it to my daughter who has perfect eyesight.

Johann Georg Hamann (1730-88) is a major figure not only in German philosophy but also in literature and religious history. In his own time he wrote penetrating criticisms of Herder, Kant, Mendelssohn, and other Enlightenment thinkers; after his death he was an important figure for Goethe, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and others. It was only in the twentieth century, however, that the full and radical extent of his 'linguistic' critique of philosophy was recognized. This volume presents a translation of a wide selection of his essays, including both famous and lesser-known works. Hamann's enigmatic prose-style was deliberately at odds with Enlightenment assumptions about language, and a full apparatus of annotation explains the numerous allusions in his essays. The volume is completed by a historical and philosophical introduction and suggestions for further reading.

Indispensable but Flawed

In the view of Kant, Goethe, Hegel, and Kierkegaard, Hamann was a genius of extraordinary insight and depth. In fact, Goethe called him the brightest light of his age. But Hamann remains in obscurity, especially in the Anglophone world, and therefore any reliable edition of his writings in English is to be welcomed.

This edition by Cambridge is without doubt the most simultaneously affordable, reliable, and extensive collection of Hamann's writings in English. It is thus indispensable for anyone who desires to read Hamann in English. Its indispensability is a function of its status on the market - it's the only such collection of texts. Kenneth Haynes should be commended for editing the text, but he was a strange choice for Cambridge, as Haynes is a specialist neither in Hamann nor even in German philosophy or literature (cf. his CV). This is only one of many drawbacks to this valuable text.

For many figures, just having the texts available is enough to justify an edition like this, but Hamann is exceptional: his texts are so obscure in style, content, and context that they require substantial introduction and commentary if one wishes to understand them. The only explanation of each text is the (on average) single paragraph each selection receives in Haynes' introduction. This is hardly adequate, especially for a series designed for students' use. This is the first serious flaw of the text itself: inadequate introductory and commentary material. Students will need more than this text to begin understanding Hamann, even on an introductory level (five pages of introduction to each text would have extended the book by only 60 pages, still putting it just under 300 pages of text, which seems entirely reasonable).

The second is the omission of Hamann's Socratic Memorabilia (only a tiny excerpt is included). Given that this is Hamann's most significant single text on his relationship to the Enlightenment and philosophy, that it provides one of most significant interpretations of Socrates of the period, one which a student should be able to compare with, say, Hegel's or Kierkegaard's or Nietzsche's, the omission of this text from a collection of Hamann's writings on "Philosophy and Language" is not simply bizarre but totally unjustified. Anyone teaching Hamann would likely assign the Socratic Memorabilia and anyone new to Hamann needs to read it; its omission thus vitiates the introductory purpose of the text.

Although this text is indispensable, then, it is flawed, even as an introductory collection.

Thus, supplementation is needed, and here is the sad part: there is no affordable book that contains even the Socratic Memorabilia (perhaps Cambridge will someday re-issue a new edition of Haynes' edition with a full translation). Thus, the student wishing to have a good introduction to Hamann, besides owning this book, needs access to a university library. Get James O'Flaherty's edition of the text, with commentary, or the translation, also with extensive introduction and commentary, in Gwen Griffith Dickson's "Hamann's Relational Metacriticsm". For further introductory material on Hamann, read Frederick Beiser's chapter dealing with Hamann in "The Fate of Reason," O'Flaherty's monograph, "Unity and Language," and at least the first essay in his book "The Quarrel of Reason with Itself." We also now have a thorough overview of Hamann in English, John R. Betz "After Enlighenment." This is an invaluable book. Its only drawback for the student is that its engagement with post-modernity, etc. is irrelevant to getting a basic handle on Hamann's context. Still, the scholarship is excellent and coverage is thorough. In addition to this text, then, O'Flaherty, Dickson, and Betz should be more than enough to get one started on understanding Hamann.

Hamann -- The Counter Enlightenment's Little Known Genius

Since the 18th century, Hamann has been little known and translated into English. His works have been scattred about and difficult to obtain. Historically, this absence might seem odd. Herder, who worked with both Kant and Hamann, chose Hamann as his mentor. Hamann influenced Goethe and is often credited with the "storm and stress" movement of what was to become romanticism. Two reasons may account for this disregard: Hamann writes in a poetic manner stuffed with allusions and tropes AND he wages war against the analytic orientation that Kant represents and is taken as right. This edition does a great job with the former with extensive notes to allusions and on translation. The second objection is up to the reader.

Suhel writes columns in The Financial Times, Hindustan Times, The Telegraph, and The Indian Express on current affairs and has co-authored two books on Calcutta with Khushwant Singh and R.K. Laxman.

Good Book!

Happend to pick this book along with "In The Name of the People - K.R. Narayanan" and "The Winning Way, for Managers - Harsha Bhogle" at Mumbai Airport while my way back to Chicago.

I happened to Read this book after i completed "In the Name of the People". I should tell you This book has straight forward lessons we can apply in daily life, no matter if you are a student,Officer,Entrepreneur,Socio, or HighLife guy. I completed this book within a day, No convoluted words, phrases etc.. just plain piece of gem advice.

Great Book, looking forward to read more of Suhel Seth's work.

Some eloquently put words and thoughts that we need to adopt and use it as a part of our daily life. It is a quick read and doesn't drag like most self improvement books. To the point. Suhel has done well to give his own examples and in turn a glimpse into his lifestyle!

Pearls of wisdom…directly from Suhel Seth…you can love him or hate him..but cannot ignore . In this book , he talks about some rules to become successful socially and throw light on various situations of life and equations between friends. Suhel tells how to behave in manner that is best for you and how to keep your self-esteem intact .A must read !!
