Barbara Caruso ably narrates Eleanor's transformation from shy and gawky young girl to internationally known world traveler and major political force. Convinced that what she wanted from life could only be attained by "the opportunity for doing something useful," Eleanor seized every chance afforded her by her position as wife of the president to work for peace and prosperity both at home and overseas. Caruso's matter-of-fact tone matches Mrs. Roosevelt's personality. Her reading is crisp and no-nonsense-a good choice for conveying Roosevelt's pragmatic and self-effacing character. A timid child from a dysfunctional family, Eleanor Roosevelt became a courageous woman whose career was propelled by a series of devastating events: FDR's polio, his relationship with Lucy Mercer, his election to offices that doomed his wife to supportive roles, his death; each time, with energy, determination, and an eye for the essential, Eleanor found new outlets and broke new ground with her accomplishments. Giving up her Democratic Party office when FDR was elected governor, she became his eyes and ears--a role she expanded as First Lady, touring the country and the world to observe and ask questions, winning over critics, reporting, advising, and acting as bellwether for forward-looking ideas on social policy and women's rights. After FDR's death, she chaired the UN commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And always, she wrote--articles, books, a daily column; presided over a large family with its share of troubles; and kept in touch with an ever-growing circle of close friends. In this generously full history (longer than his Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1990, and with more numerous, equally fine b&w photos), Freedman focuses, properly, on the public life more than the personal one, as Mrs. Roosevelt herself did. The story of a shy, timid and unloved girl who grew up to be the most important woman of her life time

I was really surprised by this book. I was expecting an average biography, but I was pulled in from the opening page. As a child, Eleanor Roosevelt was told constantly by her mother to develop her social skills and manners because she didn't have any looks. The daughter of the wealthy and socially prominent Roosevelt family, niece to Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor had a close relationship with her father, but felt inferior to her beautiful and disapproving mother. Eleanor's early family life was torn with unhappiness as her mother became estranged from her alcoholic father. Eleanor was mostly raised by her grandmother when the family moved in after the separation of her mother and father, and the death of both her parents by age ten. Eleanor first begin to develop her amazing personality when she went to finishing school at fifteen in Europe. She was very intelligent and a favorite of the girls and headmistress. After her coming out in New York at eighteen, Eleanor and her distant cousin Franklin became secretly engaged, and married after Franklin finished law school. Eleanor was interested in Franklin and helping him as he became active in politics. Eleanor became devastated after learning of Franklin's affair with Lucy Mercer. This was the catalyst that capitulated Eleanor to become the independent woman and political fighter for women's rights and human injustice. Although Eleanor eventually decided to continued her marriage to Franklin, and was a faithful and true supporter of his political aspirations, she lost the love of their early marriage. She built a life around her children and the many friendships she had made from the political committees and travels she was to take for her now husband President who was paralyzed from polio. She loved being an educator and serving the poor and downtrodden. She was an advisor to her husband, and had great influence on his policies. When President Franklin died, she was appointed to many important committees and continued to serve the public under several other presidents. She was an avid writer and speaker who traveled the world to bring support and relief to those in need. Eleanor became know as the Most Influential Woman of her lifetime. She was loved by many and hated by her dissenters. This is her story. Once reading this biography you will never forget her courage, her love of life, her heart for the bettering of the American people, and her worldwide mission to help those in need. This is an exceptional read.

A Great Lady!

I'd studied the Roosevelt era, watched movies about Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, knew that Eleanor Roosevelt was a very bright, articulate and "headstrong" wife...but I confess, that was about the extent of what I knew about her. I first got this book from the library as an assignment for one of the children I homeschool. I was trying to find "real life" heroes for them above and beyond Wonder Woman and Spiderman!

I read the book first myself and was amazed at this woman. She was incredible! It was made all the more poignant for me because my father was one of the servicemen she met on one of her overseas trips. I enjoyed the many pictures, but the writing was great and the story compelling. My great niece enjoyed the book too.

I enjoyed it so much that I decided I wanted a hardback cover book for my own library...hence, this purchase. It will be one of the "hand-me-downs" to other family members. In the meantime, I don't have words any more compelling than these to encourage others to purchase and read this book. I'm sure you'll admire and respect Eleanor Roosevelt as much as I do...she goes way above and beyond politics!

As a fan, still, of Eleanor Roosevelt, I was anxious to read her words and see how they would encourage this writer in her quest.
The result did not disappoint, although it did make me feel like a couch potato! I think the idea of facing one's fears, without worrying if we look foolish is something I have taken away from the book.

The Lympne Trials were important events in the early development of light aircraft and are not well known in the United States. This well illustrated book covers the events and the aircraft of a time when flight was new. Aircraft like the "Parnell Pixie" and the "de Havilland Humming Bird" should inspire today's light plane designers. If you are interested in the development of light aircraft you should add this to your library.

About the Author
Adrian Fernandez is the manager of the Microcontroller Customer Experience team at Texas Instruments and holds a B.S.E.E from the University of Texas at Austin. In his role, he is responsible for defining the microcontroller development ecosystem and augmenting the ways developers interact and develop with TI microcontrollers. In recent years, Adrian has focused on the LaunchPad Evaluation Development Platform to create a low-cost, easy-to-use and friendly tool for enabling people of all experience levels to start making stuff with microcontrollers. Through developing the LaunchPad ecosystem, Adrian has had the pleasure of working and interacting with the online & maker community. Adrian lives in Dallas, TX with his better-half Ellen and pug Ollie.

Dung Dang is an applications engineer for Texas Instruments Microcontroller Group and holds an M.S.E.E from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Serving various roles in new product development, he is responsible for shaping new microcontroller definitions and using the products to realize and enable innovative applications. Dung has also defined and driven several microcontroller software solutions and development tools.

Within the area of development tools, Dung started the work on the LaunchPad since its inception, created the very first BoosterPacks, and has since continued to develop and support the ecosystem surrounding this tool. Through this work, he has been privileged and fortunate to witness the excitement and the warm reception of the LaunchPad in the community. Do NOT get the Kindle version!

This is for the Kindle edition.
The approach of the book seems good, but the Kindle version is worthless.
All the code examples, commands, and functions are presented in some font which my Kindle cannot display.
Enlarging the text does not help. I can see that there is something there, it's just unreadable.
It's a shame, because this seems to be a good introductory book for the MSP430.
I was able to return it for a refund, so that's something I suppose.
I would urge the author to work with Amazon to get this fixed. I would buy a corrected version.

great tutorial to the msp430

Arduino is huge in the hobby electronics community for learning about micro controllers. For industrial applications the MSP430 from TI has long been a solid choice for new designs, and it has a very cost effective learning tool, the msp430 launchpad board (MSP-EXP430G2) which is one third the price of Arduino. The book uses a public domain IDE called energia which is similar to the Arduino IDE, as it should be - its based on both wiring and the Arduino IDE. This book is a great introduction to getting started with the msp430. If you are new to electronics and or micro controllers this is a great place to start. In increasing detail it explains how to use msp430 features, and explores interfacing to external components either discretely or using a third party discovery board with the following sensors and devices on it for around twenty five bucks at Digikey

Various labs explore how to interface to parts on the board and the associated code to implement the interface between the circuit and to the micro controller. Each circuit is shown as a discrete circuit in case you don't have the discovery board, or just want to learn that circuit.

For a beginner to MSP 430 I give this 5 stars; for people with lots of experience less. Largely because the chances are that for a lot of projects you may want to go beyond the Energia IDE and use code composer. The other reason for dropping a star is that for the sake of completeness I would have liked to have seen deeper coverage of I2C. That being said I still really like this book.

All in all this is a great book, very readable, and very practical.

Excellent Book

This book was long overdue. It must be remembered too that the authors of it are trying to reach a broad audience and consequently the style may not appeal to hardcore engineers with 30+ years of experience. Having said that it WILL appeal to those that want to get started in MCU's and have NO experience with them. The MSP430 range is broad and exciting potentially and the kind of projects that one can imagine for other MCU's lie well within its' capabilities. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone that wants to get into programming and embedded systems or even someone that wants to learn simple skills relevant to the future of electronics.

A good story, but lacks something from the first.

Yes! Much longer than the first book! Mr. Simmonds continues to write wonderfully and kept my attention over the period of 4 or 5 hours that it took me to read it. Avis is back at it, and this time with a few more twists and turns, he makes and loses friends(rather quickly, I might add). I both like and hate what he has done to a few of the main characters, especially Tina's family. I'll be back for the third installment, but it will be with some trepidation.

Pros:
Adds a depth to some of the characters who had been rather flat.
I didn't feel as lost in certain parts. It didn't feel rushed or like Mr. Simmonds had forgotten to include something.
The story again blew me out of the water at certain points. (I was sure a certain JG was definitely evil).

Cons:
Again, I don't like how all of Tina's family is turned into a sniveling mass of cowardice. (Especially Ernie).
Certain parts of the plot felt much more predictable this time.
Tina and JG's relationship feels forced. Especially for two thirteen-year-olds.

I would like to give this a score somewhere between 4 and 5, but closer to 4 this time around.

So after reading the first one, I read the second. I like the characters. Good development and plot. Believe this would be a good read for any age. Some of the characters did seem a little weak compared to first book, hence the star rating but would definitely read more of this series if they came out.

Great Book!

This book kept me on the edge of my seat with the aspect of mystery and thrill! I have read the Harry Potter series 4 times and after reading this book and the first Avis Blackthorn book I am pleased to say this book was quite similar in many aspects but had a completely different and magical plot to it that I thoroughly enjoyed! I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of magical reading!

Divided into three parts, Part I of Multicomponent Mass Transfer offers a detailed overview of the basic equations of diffusion in multicomponent systems. Chapters cover continuing relations for mass, momentum, and energy; mass transfer fluxes and reference velocity frames; Maxwell-Stefan relations; diffusion in electrolyte systems; Fick's law for binary mixtures and multicomponent systems; irreversible thermodynamics; procedures for estimating diffusion coefficients in multicomponent mixtures; and methods for solution of multicomponent diffusion programs. Part II describes known models of mass and energy transfer. Multicomponent mass transfer coefficients are defined and the multicomponent film model developed. The unsteady state of diffusion models is examined as are models based on turbulent eddy diffusion. Finally, the book tackles the additional complication of simultaneous mass and energy transfer. In Part III the authors cover the various applications of multicomponent mass transfer models to process design. A new way of looking into mass transfer

The book starts by deriving the Maxwell-Stefan equations, the correct framwork to deal with multicomponent mass transfer problems and comparing it with the more traditional approaches to multicomponent mass transfer. Some chapters on estimation of diffusivities and mass transfer coefficients follow. In the second part, the book jumps into interphase mass transfer, where the theory is fully applied to derive "working equations". These chapters treat in a unified way all the problems that previously requieres empricial, approximate or separate treatments. The chapter on simultaneous heat and mass transfer is particularly good.
The book has a third part on design, where the focus is set on practical aspects of the theroy developed in previous chapters. It has "real life" examples on distillation, absorption and condensation, and many other applications are treated as exercises. This helps the reader to get in touch with the applications of the theory.
This is a book useful for advanced students, scientists and engineers who want to go a step further in their understanding of the physical principles behind mass transfer. The book is very balanced between theory and application and provides the basis for extending the theory to any mass transfer problem ever imagined. The book is very concise, and always thinks about the usefulness of the theory, there are no useless things here. It comes with a disk with the problems solved in MathCad, something that proves very handy.
I liked the book very much, and I think it is much better than the traditional books on the field, which looked more like cookbooks that engineering books. This book is going to be a classic. Highly reccomended.
