Handy little idea starter

This is a very useful book for breaking up a creative logjam, but like any other resource, it should be treated as a starting point and I think the author recognizes this fact. What I like is its format and size, allowing portability and not much space taken up on my bookshelf. I look forward to applying ideas that spring from these exercises.

Sweet little book.

This is a very cute little inspirational book. It,s a book you carry in your purse and occasionally pull out and flip open to a random page as you wait for a friend. Or a book you keep on your nightstand to read a few pages before sleep, or before writing for 10 minutes before bed.

I find myself mulling around thoughts prompted by this book as I do dishes or take the elevator at work.

The book is full of inspiring flotsam and wonderful tidbits of ideas that will get your brain thinking and maybe even your heart feeling a little more. [...] The author gives frequent interesting hints on recent developments of mathematics connected to the concepts which are introduced. The Introduction also contains comments that are very unusual in a book on mathematical analysis, going from pedagogy to critique of the French scientific-military-industrial complex, but the sequence of ideas is introduced in such a way that readers are less surprised than they might be.

At first glance, this book, copublished with the British Library, appears very similar to Anthony Hobson's Great Libraries (Putnam, 1970. o.p.), but only the second half is comparable to the earlier work. Book 1 is an encyclopedic narrative history of libraries from approximately 3000 BCE to 1600 CE. Except for two short chapters on library development in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, this section is nearly equally divided between the libraries of the Greek East and the Latin West. Book 2 contains individual chapters on 14 European libraries founded before 1600. Ten of the libraries, including the Vatican Library, France's Biblioth que Nationale, and Oxford University's Bodleian Library, are also covered in Hobson. Staikos also includes additional Eastern European libraries such as the Oecumenical Patriarchate Library in Constantinople, the Strahov Abbey Library in Prague, and Hungary's defunct Corvinian Library but, unlike Hobson, excludes all non-European libraries. Author Staikos (The Charta of Greek Printing) has worked on the interior design of two of the historic Greek libraries featured here, and he displays impressive scholarship in this lavishingly illustrated (in both black-and-white and color) tome. This is definetely one of the most stunning books about books, that
have been published in recent times. First, the sheer size seems
enormous, but what really counts is the insides. The book is devided
into two parts, the first tracing the history of libraries, the second
describing some of europes most exciting libraries.
The text is easy to read, and never becomes academically, but always
well told and interesting.
The production of the book derserves a few words. As told before
this is a big and heavy book. One could actually wish, that the book had
been split into two smaller volumes, since its hard to sit and read with
a volume this gigantic. With that said, it should be noted that everything
else about this book is topnotch; the paper, the binding and the illustrations
(nearly one on every page).
This book deserves to be on every booklovers shelf.

About the Author
Roland Kidwell is an associate professor of management in the College of Business Administration at Niagara University (NY).  He has a PhD in business administration from Louisiana State University.  His research interests include withholding effort in work groups and other collectives, business ethics and human resource issues in small businesses.  His research has appeared in various academic journals including the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Small Group Research and Journal of Business Ethics.  He co-authored the text, HRM from A to Z, Critical questions asked & answered (2001: McGraw-Hill Irwin).

Christopher L. Martin is Dean of the Frost School of Business and holder of the Linco Eminent Scholars Chair of Business Administration at Centenary College of Louisiana. Prior to joining Centenary, Dr. Martin was professor and chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. His writings have addressed organizational fairness, anger and disruptive workplace behavior, technologically driven change, organizational downsizing, human resource management strategy, trust, and leadership. His research has appeared in numerous journals, including The Journal of Applied Psychology, The Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, OBHDP, and Administrative Sciences Quarterly. In this collection of essays and case studies, the causes of deviant, as well as correct/proper, behavior in organizations are described, leading to proposals for reducing the former and inducing the latter. The approach is, essentially, behavioral, identifying antecedents ("root causes", p. xiv) of behavior which, the contributors contend, reside primarily in organizational structures and processes: "managers would do well to consider the roles [effects] that structure . . . and processes play in [causing] deviant behavior and how these organizational features could be used to effectively channel potential deviance into positive outcomes [behaviors] for organizations" (p. x). Change/modify/reform organizational structures and process and you can thereby reduce badmouthing the organization (Ch. 4), lying, bullying, and harassment in the workplace (Ch. 7, 8), organizational aggression (Ch. 10), and other types of deviant behavior while, at the same time, these changes/modifications/reforms in structures and processes can help induce and sustain behaviors that constitute--in the words of consultant and author, Robert Levering--"great place[s] to work".
Changing organizational structures and processes is a much more effective way to bring about better behaving personnel than reliance on boards of ethics, education and training in ethics, codes of ethics, and the like. The latter, since Watergate, have become part of the conventional approach to organizational deviance and are known to be largely ineffective. Only by changing "organizational features"--only by changing what personnel experience in the day-by-day execution of their work and obligations--will we optimize the results of our efforts for betterment.

Fantastic Book for Language Learners of All Walks of Life

I, a soon-to-be college graduate, have found that my penchant for language acquisition has led me to a variety of language environments, both in classroom and immersive settings. Furthermore, in an age where foreign language abilities are often viewed more as credentials than as a way of life, there are myriad approaches of language learning. Yo Sakakibara, founder of the LEX Language Project and Hippo Family Club, has devoted his life work to observing this societal trait, and Language is Our Music provides a look into his mind as he formulates and tests his unique theories surrounding the human propensity for language. This memoir-style book introduces a novel "approach" to language acquisition and is a must-read for anyone with an innate passion for foreign language.

Having spent a large portion of time studying language in a classroom, I always found the method of teaching language in an area devoid of peer-interaction somewhat inhibitory for honing ones finesse in language-after all, languages are fundamentally a means of communication. Sakakibara understands this apparent contradiction and presents an alternative. The foundation of his work lies in the natural process that babies undergo to begin speaking one (or several) language(s), and all of his assertions are spot on. He writes in a manner that draws the reader to view languages through his eyes, and he intentionally presents his thoughts through personal experience, rather than formal academic research. In this way, the reader can easily empathize, as he draws compelling conclusions from everyday human experience. More specifically, he extends his observations on language to address the cultural sensitivity and appreciation that comes with learning languages, illuminating the cultural context that languages carry and their importance in an age heavily concerned with the rapid globalization of our planet.

At its core, Language is Our Music is a light-hearted, yet fascinating book that is accessible to all levels of readers. I would highly recommend it, especially to those looking to open their eyes to a new perspective of language acquisition. In an increasingly technology-centric modern society, it is easy to forget the elegance of the human mind, and through his articulate account of language exploration, Sakakibara reminds us to always remember how we came to master the complex social communication using our inborn abilities.

A must-read for anyone serious about multiple language acquisition...

I really learned a lot about language acquisition reading this book, but it also confirmed a lot of my own findings and intuitions regarding learning any particular language at any age, as well acquiring speaking ability in multiple languages. I have studied six different languages at various times in my life, and found Yo Sakakibara's observations spot on--especially his observations about the importance of concentrating on aural understanding prior to trying to read a language, his recommendations regarding learning multiple languages at once as actually making language acquisition easier and less stressful, and his emphasis on creating a language learning environment that is fun, communal, noncompetitive and multigenerational. Sakakibara also reminds us that language acquisition is primarily about being understood, not about perfection, and that there is a natural process to learning languages that reminds us of how we learned our own first language--slowly, over years, and in by communicating with people who are important to our needs and our lives. A must-read for anyone serious about multiple language acquisition.

Not for Me

Susan's own author homepage bears the slogan, "Life's too short to read depressing books". That's a motto I take to heart, and how I allot time to my reading material. I think I have read every other book that Susan Elizabeth Phillips has written, and most I would have given 5 stars to--ordinarily I love her writing. I'll admit it, I just couldn't make myself continue reading this book. It is depressing, kind of creepy, and totally was not entertaining at all, nor did I have any hope that it was going to get better. I found myself on this site checking out other reviews, and quickly found that I wasn't the only one having a problem with this book. I couldn't make myself go beyond one chapter. The puppets voices were creepy and annoying, and it was just depressing as heck. Just not for me at all.. My guidelines for books, movies, entertainment, etc., is that I want to feel better for having read it, watched it, or experienced it. Sorry, Susan, but this just wasn't what I was expecting from you, based on your previous wonderful books, and it seemed pointless to slog my way through it. I hate giving one star reviews, but this was just not to my liking at all.

heartwarming and Oh SO fun. One can not listen to a Susan Elizabeth ...

I discovered SEP about a year ago and haven't stopped reading and/or listening to her books ever since. Her books are humorous, heartwarming and Oh SO fun. One can not listen to a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book without laughing out loud (always odd when your driving alone), shedding a few tears and rooting for the hero/heroine from beginning to end. Needless to say the narration of SEP's books by Anna Fields only adds to the overall experience and joy.
I look forward to reading SEP postings on Facebook and her website. I love that she shares her everyday joys, angst and life with Mr. Bill. When SEP announced her release of "Heroes are My Weakness" I pre-ordered my copy immediately on audible.com Last night I counted the minutes until midnight and as the clock struck 12 I had my download. Yippe, Yippe,Yea, Yea.
With high hopes and even higher expectations I began to listen; this is where it went south. The storyline is dark and humorless. Annie's fascination and her constant inner chatter with her "puppets" is kind of creepy. Between the puppets, the bunko club and the non endearing cast of characters I was distracted and lost interested quickly. With that said I am not ready to give up on this book…yet.
If you are new to SEP, the Chicago Stars series, Natural Born Charmer, First Lady and Fancy pants is the way to go. SEP I will always be a fan, this one just didn't do it for me.

Uhm...Sorry, but no cigar.

Um...I can't believe I'm going to write an unflattering review for The Goddess SEP. But "Heroes Are My Weakness" just doesn't come close to making the cut.
Remember "Breathing Room?" That heroine was broke, too, and came looking - not for her "legacy" but for solace and restoration of spirit. She found both in a wonderfully wicked, sarcastic, BEAUTIFUL hero named Ren.
And "Ain't She Sweet?" There was something between Colin and Sugar Beth that is missing between Annie and Theo. Maybe because she kept on so long about his youthful misdeeds.
But in "Heroes," Theo doesn't have a sarcastic thing to say, and although he's sexy, he doesn't appear to be as sexy as either Ren or Colin; and Annie is, well, weird. Who can identify with her? Let me tell you, I LOVE puppets, but Annie's alter egos seem to make her less appealing, not more.
The grandmothers were another strange twist. They're cruel and hateful! What's that about? Even when they admitted their wrongdoing, it didn't endear them to me.
To say I'm disappointed is putting it mildly. I mean, as soon as a new book is announced, I order it and mark my calendar with reminders that it's coming six months in advance. But The Great Escape and Heroes were pretty much duds. So sad!!
Going back to The Stars doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. Or - what's happening with Daisy and Alex? Or Ren and Isabel?

Rebecca Kirby, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC

Rebecca Kirby is a charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and started the first residency-training program in that specialty. Her articles, textbooks, and clinical research have advanced the veterinary profession and inspired students. She has lectured in over 24 countries and won recognition as Speaker of the Year at the North American Veterinary Conference. Her awards include 2001 Veterinarian of the Year by the AAHA, 2003 Ira Zaslow Distinguished Service Award from the VECCS, and 2005 Hills Award for Excellence in Veterinary Medicine awarded by the WSVA. She is also a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Elke Rudloff, DVM, DACVECC

Elke Rudloff is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. She has trained 25 ACVECC Diplomates and is currently a clinical instructor at the Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists in Wisconsin. She serves as the IVECCS Program Coordinator. She is the 2008 recipient of the Ira Zaslow Award for distinguished service in the field of veterinary emergency and critical care and is an internationally recognized educator in the field of veterinary emergency and critical care. Her special interests include fluid resuscitation, emergency surgery, and trauma management, topics on which she has published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.

Originally from Canada, Andrew Linklater moved to the US to pursue advanced veterinary training; he is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He has been actively involved in mentoring critical care interns and residents for over a decade and works at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists in Wisconsin, where he oversees the management of critically ill and injured patients and performs advanced diagnostics and therapeutics.
