All Souls: A Family Story from Southie, by Michael Patrick MacDonald

A breakaway bestseller since its first printing, All Souls takes us deep into Michael Patrick MacDonald’s Southie, the proudly insular neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. The anti-busing riots of 1974 forever changed Southie, Boston’s working class Irish community, branding it as a violent, racist enclave. Michael Patrick MacDonald grew up in Southie’s Old Colony housing project. He describes the way this world within a world felt to the troubled yet keenly gifted observer he was even as a child: “[as if] we were protected, as if the whole neighborhood was watching our backs for threats, watching for all the enemies we could never really define.”

But the threats-poverty, drugs, a shadowy gangster world-were real. MacDonald lost four of his siblings to violence and poverty. All Souls is heart-breaking testimony to lives lost too early, and the story of how a place so filled with pain could still be “the best place in the world.”

We meet Ma, Michael’s mini-skirted, accordian-playing, usually single mother who cares for her children there are eventually eleven through a combination of high spirits and inspired “getting over.” And there are Michael’s older siblings Davey, sweet artist-dreamer; Kevin, child genius of scam; and Frankie, Golden Gloves boxer and neighborhood hero whose lives are high-wire acts played out in a world of poverty and pride.

But too soon Southie becomes a place controlled by resident gangster Whitey Bulger, later revealed to be an FBI informant even as he ran the drug culture that Southie supposedly never had. It was a world primed for the escalation of class violence-and then, with deadly and sickening inevitability, of racial violence that swirled around forced busing. MacDonald, eight years old when the riots hit, gives an explosive account of the asphalt warfare. He tells of feeling “part of it all, part of something bigger than I’d ever imagined, part of something that was on the national news every night.”

Within a few years-a sequence laid out in All Souls with mesmerizing urgency-the neighborhood’s collapse is echoed by the MacDonald family’s tragedies. All but destroyed by grief and by the Southie code that

doesn’t allow him to feel it, MacDonald gets out. His work as a peace activist, first in the all-Black neighborhoods of nearby Roxbury, then back to the Southie he can’t help but love, is the powerfully redemptive close to a story that will leave readers utterly shaken and changed.

From Publishers Weekly
In this plainly written, powerful memoir, MacDonald, now 32, details not only his own story of growing up in Southie, Boston's Irish Catholic enclave, but examines the myriad ways in which the media and law enforcement agencies exploit marginalized working-class communities. MacDonald was one of nine children born (of several fathers) to his mother, Helen MacDonald, a colorful woman who played the accordion in local Irish pubs to supplement her welfare checks. Having grown up in the Old Colony housing project, he describes his neighbors' indigence and pride of place, as well as their blatant racism (in 1975 the anti-busing riots in Southie made national headlines) and their deep denial of the organized crime and entrenched drug culture that was destroying the youth and social fabric. MacDonald's account is filled with vivid episodes: of his brother Davey's horrific incarceration in Mass Mental and ultimate suicide; of the time Helen took her older kids to the hospital, where her current lover was a patient, to beat him up after he denied he was the father of the child she was carrying; of the murder of his brother Frankie by his compatriots after the police shot him in an armored-car robbery. But perhaps most shocking is the accusation that the FBI was paying Southie's leading gangster, Whitey Bulger, as an informant although they knew he was the neighborhood kingpin. MacDonald, who now works on multiracial social projects in Boston, does not excuse Southie's racism, but he paints a frightening portrait of a community under intense economic and social stress, issuing a forceful plea for understanding and justice. From Booklist
"The best place in the world." That's what South Boston people

From Kirkus Reviews
An incendiary, moving book that startles on nearly every page. The notorious anti-busing riots of 1974 forever altered the insular working-class Irish community of South Boston, branding it indelibly as a dangerous, racist enclave. Anti-violence activist MacDonald grew up there and lost four out of eight siblings to violence in those dark times; his debut assesses both his family history, and related secret tales of class strife, bigotry, corruption, and vanished lives. MacDonald utilizes the classically Irish viewpoint of the stoic child to re-create a harsh arena of a 1970s ghetto and urban poverty. His single Ma felt blessed when a local politician secured her entrance to the majority-Irish Old Colony project, the best place in the world''; once there, the MacDonalds had to prove their mettle against delinquents with shotguns, thus acquiring the patina of craziness necessary for survival. At first, the nuances of color seemed minor against a vividly rendered backdrop of economic difficulty and the depraved mainstreaming of hard drugs and street crime. Then came the riots; MacDonalds surefooted (neither hardened nor sentimental) narrative takes us through the years of malaise and violence that followed, as politically connected gangsters, such as the notorious Whitey Bulger, expanded the areas drug trade while violently enforcing a macho myth of silent Southie unity, itself built on the long-burnished notion that the white community was somehow different from such similarly working-class, embattled black areas as Roxbury. This explication of how such phenomena of white class-consciousness encouraged the wholesale deterioration of his neighborhood and contributed to the demise of some 250 young people is a devastating cultural indictment. MacDonalds nimble prose and detailed recall of grim times long past make for luminous reading; his hard-won conception of how ghettoized poverty spawns localized violence, and the dignity he brings to lives snuffed out in chaos, gives All Souls a moral urgency usually lacking in current memoir or crime prose. A remarkable work. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Gritty, raw, dirty, out there , truthful
By tleeminnieme
This was a great book. The author spared no reader his descriptions of life in the Irish projects in the 60-80's. Drugs, violence, suicides, broken families- it was all put out there. Nothing was done in a manner to garner sympathy or sadness. This was a true tale of life how it was for this author. It was a hard life. In a way it was like reading a book about a Holocaust survivor. It was a great book.
I would highly recommend this book.

A competent, sad story of death and drugs in Southie
By Amazon Customer
This is a competent story – memoir – of what it was like growing up in Southie in the last few decades of the 20th century. Lots of pain and heartache in what is written here. One cannot help but feel helpless at the social problems and corruption evident in the stories. Whitey Bulger comes across as a far less dangerous person that he really was, in this book. See the Netflix documentary for more information on quite TND huge FBI, Boston police, Massachusetts police corruption of the times. Worth reading.

Accurate. From someone who didn't live in "Southie" but in "Old Colony" at that time!
By Brendan Stewart
You'll see some people chime in here about this book, from "Southie". But Southie and Old Colony don't equal the same thing. You can be from the point and not be anything like someone growing up in Old Colony. Old Colony wasn't the same as D street or Old Harbor. Secondly, my aunt is mentioned in the book as skoochie(sp?). I'm not particularly fond of being from Old Colony or having my aunt in this book, but it's who i am. Lastly, i was good friends with Tommy Veins before he got out of cotrol and died. It's a sad story overall, if tommysdad is here, i'd like to say that my condolences, but this portrayal is not far from fact at all. I was there and grew up where these things happened. And let me tell you, the book is pretty accurate. Slight details here and there might be slightly off, but for the overall idea, Accurate. Everyone knew his mom... she was an outcast for sure and he mentions this several times. I personally couldn't put my own mom out there, but kudos for him for trying to be accurate.

You'll see some people chime in here from "Southie" but unless they were from Old Colony i wouldn't take their perspective as seriously. And just as a point of argument a lot of people from "Southie" didn't like this book coming out because it casted a shadow on the town where whities affects of keeping things within southie are still being felt.

Overall i'd say read this book. It's as close as you are going to get to truly understanding what happened there at that time.

Amazon.com Review
Evangeline Scoffield of East Little Teignmouth, Cornwall, is a fraud. Rescued at a young age from an orphanage she had called home for most of her life, Evangeline goes to live with an eccentric and rich woman named Leona. When Leona disappears without a trace, Evangeline learns that she is the sole heir to the woman's fortune, and she wastes no time in packing a cache of cash and heading for Spain, posing as the refined lady she had always longed to be. To her shock, Prince Danior of Baminia appears and announces that he is her fiancé. He insists that she is the Princess Ethelinda and that they must return immediately to her kingdom where they are to be married. Evangeline's protests are cut short when someone lobs a bomb into her room and Danior pulls her to safety, explaining all the while that evil forces are determined to kill them both to prevent their marriage and the subsequent joining of their two kingdoms. The two set off on the long journey to Princess Ethelinda's kingdom, with Evangeline feeling as if she's tumbled down the rabbit hole. Not only does Danior stubbornly refuse to listen to her, but he's determined to consummate their betrothal. Evangeline's determination to set right this wrong is sadly undermined by her own growing attraction to the powerful, dark-haired prince. Still, Evangeline knows she must convince him of her humble beginnings, for a prince could never truly love a simple girl such as herself. Who is right, Evangeline or Danior? Is Evangeline the Princess Ethelinda or isn't she? And if not, how will Danior cope with the deep love he feels for her? The Runaway Princess has a dash of myth and magic, colorful secondary characters, and a wonderfully heroic hero and heroine. What more could a reader of romance ask for? --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
Dodd (A Well Favored Gentleman) transports readers into another enticing place and time, in this Regency with an inventive plot and sparkling characters. When English orphan Evangeline Scoffield comes into an unexpected inheritance, she decides to spend the money on an adventure. She travels abroad and masquerades as a "lady of mystery" at a Spanish resort. Everyone is awed by her aloofness and poise, convinced that she must be of royal lineage. When a handsome man claiming to be Prince Danior sees her, he insists she is the runaway princess of Serephinia?his betrothed. Evangeline goes along with the prince's declaration and finds herself in the middle of a war, and in mortal peril. When she tries to explain who she really is, nobody will believe her, including the gorgeous prince. Evangeline soon learns that she's destined to fulfill a prophesy and marry the prince, whether she wants to or not. Dodd's delightful story should gain glowing reviews from her growing horde of fans.

Just OK
By Catherine. Heathcliff
The story line is clever - unique and has potential. But it was confusing. There were hints to the resolution but then these would be confusingly countered by something else. Hard to explain but the end result was a not very satisfying story. I didn't think the chemistry between the main characters was strong enough to sustain the relationship. She kept insisting she was not the princess (ad nauseum) and he only cared about being king. I never felt he really cared about her. I didn't really like either of the main characters all that much. And there are inconsistencies. She is a large woman. Tall and not slight. But he carries her on his back for miles over mountains. I felt sorry for him! The writing isn't bad for the most part. Typos and weird things that may not be the author's fault. I won't be reading any more of this series. This is the second work by this author I have read. And probably my last. I will try other authors before I return to her work. Just my opinion. I am choosey with my reading time.

A Cinderella story!
By WHoosierBookie
If you have a love for fairy tales then you will love this book.
Evangeline is an orphan who has never had a chance to be her own woman. Suddenly she has the opportunity to travel and spend, so what if the money isn't legally hers? After one little taste of the good life, she will start a new, more quiet existence for herself. She doesn't count on all the gossip that she attracts.
Prince Danior is searching for his Princess Evangeline. Together only they can fulfill the prophecy to unite their two countries. His Princess has gotten a bit gunshy as the date that they must be joined together swiftly approaches. She has written him a letter telling him she can't do her duty. He is sure he can make her come around and see that they have to be married for the good of all their people. If only he could find her.
When Danior hears about the mysterious stranger staying at an inn, he is convinced she is his princess. He hasn't seen her since she was a child, but she has the coloring and features of her people.
This story has adventure. Danior must get his princess back to their country to start their rule. This is not easy because of the rebels who would rather not have the prophecy fulfilled. Also because of Evangeline herself, who knows that Danior has the wrong girl.
While there are some discrepencies and there is a supernatural edge to it, this a romantic tale about a girl who has nothing but the dream of a quiet, isolated life. What she winds up with and how she gets it is truly more than she could have ever hoped for. Oh, yes, you will also laugh!

Not a bad read, just about average....
By A Customer
If you want a good review, read Mrs. Giggle's review below (Many times I seem to agree with what she says). For a thin, on the surface, quick read, this book is just the ticket. We have a spunky yet intellegent heroine, and a...well...hero. Ms. Dodd's characters seemed a little flat to me. Don't dig too deep into these characters, you might come out the other side. Evangaline grew up as an orphan and was miraculously "found", (unknown to her of course) and taught everything she needed to know about being a princess (not knowning she was being groomed for the role). That's her character, all of it... Our hero on the other hand is a self centered, conceited, neanderthal. Everything he does is for the good of his country. I think he even convinces himself that falling in love is for it TOO!!!! Every part of this story glosses the surface. For example, what about the revolutionaries? Their beliefs, their motives, the organization? We are told that they ravage the countryside but are never shown it. Too much passive voice, telling; not enough active voice, showing. I just wish that there was some more depth to this story, I really wanted to love it, not just like it.

The image of middle-class women chaining themselves to the rails of 10 Downing Street, smashing windows of public buildings, and going on hunger strikes in the cause of "votes for women" have become visually synonymous with the British suffragette movement over the past century. Their story has become a defining moment in feminist history, in effect separating women's fight for voting rights from contemporary issues in British political history and disconnecting their militancy from other forms of political activism in Britain in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Drawing upon private papers, pamphlets, newspapers, and the records of a range of suffrage and political organizations, Laura E. Nym Mayhall examines militancy as both a political idea and a set of practices that suffragettes employed to challenge their exclusion from the political nation. She traces the development of the suffragettes' concept of resistance from its origins within radical liberal discourse in the 1860s, to its emergence as political practice during Britain's involvement in the South African War, its reliance on dramatic spectacle by suffragette organizations, and its memorialization following enfranchisement. She reads closely the language and tactics militants used, analyzing their challenges in the courtroom, on the street, and through legislation as reasoned actions of female citizens. The differences in strategy among militants are highlighted, not just in the use of violence, but also in their acceptance and rejection of the authority of the law and their definitions of the ideal relationship between individuals and the state. Variations in the nature of protest continued even during World War I, when most suffragettes suspended their activities to serve the nation's war effort, while others joined peace movements, opposed the state's reduction of civil liberties in wartime, and continued the struggle for suffrage.
Mayhall's revealing account of the militant suffrage movement sheds new light upon the social history of gender but, more importantly, it connects this movement to the political and intellectual history of Britain. Not only did militancy play an essential role in the achievement of women's political rights but it also contributed to the practice of engaged citizenship and the growth of liberal democracy.

Review

"In this splendid book, Laure Nym Mayhall redefines suffrage militancy and explores it perceptively as a complex and sophisticated political idea involving a wide range of organizations, strategies, and practices. A singular achievement. Mayhall has done the history of women in Britain and the wider history of British political culture a great service." --History: Review of New Books

"Laura Nym Mayhall's account is one of a number of feminist reassessments of the militant suffrage campaign, and one that seeks to reclaim militancy as a serious political tactic against the onslaughts of less sympathetic writers who have dismissed it as a manifestation of female hysteria. Nym Mayhall's work reminds us of the diversity of militancy as well as its political dimensions and is a welcome contribution to the broader feminist project of reclaiming the WSPU as a political body." --Journal of Modern History

"Just when it seemed that this field had exhausted itself in terms of both evidence and paradigms, Mayhall's book recaptures suffrage history not just for politics, but for Victorian and Edwardian history broadly conceived."-Antoinette Burton, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

"Here is a stimulating book which explores the lineage of the militant suffrage movement, crucially integrating it into the wider development of modern British political culture. From the very first page we are encouraged to interrogate and so reconfigure the contours and meanings of suffrage militancy."-Angela V. John, University of Greenwich

"Historians of women and gender are radically transforming how we think about the complex ways in which claims to citizenship can be raised and nowhere more clearly than in studies of the early twentieth-century struggles over the franchise. Laura Mayhall's splendid book brings largeness of vision, impressive breadth, and precision to this task. It challenges British historians to pay attention."--Geoff Eley, University of Michigan

"In this splendid book, Laura Nym Mayhall redefines suffrage militancy....This is a singular achievement....Mayhall has done the history of women in Britain and the wider history of British political culture a great service."--Journal of British Studies

"Mayhall's work offers fresh and stimulating insights into this often puzzling phenomenon. She has a special ability to see beyond the frenzy of demonstrations and deputations and to recognize the historical process of "fetishization" that has conflated militancy with violence. With this thoughtful study, Mayhall has moved suffrage militancy permanently off the shelf of odd curiosities."--Jacqueline R. deVries, Augsburg College

"In bringing to light the dynamism and range of practices of constitutional suffrage militancy before and during the Great War and its differences of opinion on fundamental questions, in illuminating the relationship suffragettes asserted between resistance and citizenship, and in contextualizing the militant suffrage movement within the British radical political and intellectual tradition, Mayhall has done the history of women in Britain and the wider history of British political culture a great service."--Albion

Book came with missing pages, pages out of order, whole chapters missing. It was brand new and sealed so I was shocked. I'm returning and buying the ebook because I need it for school and I can't wait to see if the next one is functional. I hope we don't need it during class or lab...

Lacks clarity and organization
By Psyleid
The first time I read this book I did not like it. I figured I was being too harsh. My second time reading it only made me dislike it more. I'm not saying it is a horrible book, but it is not as easy to read as most other textbooks I have learned from.

My main gripes are that the book lacks clarity and organization. The authors use an approachable, casual tone. An unintended side effect is vague language and poor word choice results in confusion. Sometimes an adequate introductory paragraph with a structural overview for a chapter or segment is not provided. In some instances, they provide an overview paragraph then abandon the structure it provided. Other times structure is not logically appealing. Paragraphs may cite information that seems out of place or unimportant and feel overall disorganized/ lost. Additionally, there are outright errors (the instructor had to state when to ignore the text) lead to more confusion.

White Mother to a Dark Race: Settler Colonialism, Maternalism, and the Removal of Indigenous Children in the American West and Australia, 1

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American Indians in the United States and Aboriginal people in Australia suffered a common experience at the hands of state authorities: the removal of their children to institutions in the name of assimilation. Although officially characterized as benevolent, these policies often inflicted great trauma on indigenous families and ultimately served the settler nations’ larger goals of consolidating control over indigenous peoples and their lands.
White Mother to a Dark Race examines the key roles white women played in these removal policies. Government officials, missionaries, and reformers justified the removal of indigenous children in particularly gendered ways by focusing on the supposed deficiencies of indigenous mothers, the alleged barbarity of indigenous men, and the lack of a patriarchal nuclear family in indigenous societies. Often they deemed white women the most appropriate agents to carry out child-removal policies. Inspired by the maternalist movements of the era, many white women were eager to serve as surrogate mothers to indigenous children and maneuvered to influence public policy affecting indigenous people. Although some white women developed caring relationships with indigenous children and others became critical of government policies, many became ensnared in this insidious colonial policy.

Well-written and very informative
By Monika G
As a history student, I read this book largely to supplement a course lectured by one of Dr. Jacob's own former students, but I found myself unable to put it down after opening it.

I think this book is definitely a must-read for any Native Studies historians, or any history student esp. in the Midwest and Western U.S. and in Australia.

Jacobs covers very well the topics of indigenous child removal, including the affects it had on children and families and the consequences of removal policies. She also clearly explains every facet of white maternalism which offers invaluable contextual information. Neither praising nor vilifying those involved in child removal, Jacobs' writing style allows readers to formulate their own views and responses to child removal policies.

Dr. Jacobs mentions many case studies she performed and her time spent researching is very well reflected in this book.

The book ends with a very powerful epilogue and afterword.

Publisher's Sabotage
By D. Stannard
This is an important and prize-winning book that deserves wide distribution, including college course adoptions in several disciplines. But the price of the book guarantees failure. A major trade publisher should buy the paperback rights and release a reasonably priced paperback ASAP.

Another story that should be told
By The Sassy Countess
Absolutely wonderful! This history is not caught up in one side says this and the other says that. It shares the stories of women and the children who were raised by them. Some had great stories, others were horrific. They were honest and non-apologetic. Jacobs writes in a "Here is what happened!" manner.

Different version don't trust description!!
By Steve
It was the SI version, when I called and asked if it was the same as the regular version they told me it was then when I received it the problems didn't match up and there are no solutions for it. It is not the same book as the hard copy even though that's what it's under. Do not order the paper back unless you are 100% sure that you're using the different version. Now I might be out 90 bucks and still have to buy the book for my class somewhere else.

Good Textbook
By Ozgun Ataman
I bought this book about 4 months ago for my Statics class at university. The book is well organized and the concepts as well as the examples are easy to follow. I have found it to be a very good reference especially if one is learning some of the concepts mentioned in the book from scratch. There is a sufficient number of examples and problems for one to digest the material.

On the downside, the book does not have the feel of a general purpose reference book and should be regarded as a textbook that is to be followed in order to learn the material inside.

This Jessie James doesn't carry a gun, but she's like a weapon of mass destruction...to his heart.
By FromTheSouth
If you enjoy a quick, flirty, miscommunication/second chance romantic read featuring a strong, witty heroine and a reluctant but simply can’t resist her hero, you should check into Tamed by the Outlaw by Michelle Sharp. Grayson Reynolds recently took over his grandfather’s publishing firm. He is now bound and determined to cut all ties with the romance division by selling it off. The only thing standing in his way is best-selling romance author, Jessie James (Jessie Jameson). She may not be packing a gun, but she is like a weapon of mass destruction, as far as he is concerned. After thinking she walked out on him after their amazing brief time together, he hopes this will also finally cut him loose from his memories of her. He simply has to convince her to void her contract and agree to sign on with the other publisher. Jessie, thinking he did the same to her, isn’t so quick to trust him…about anything. After all, he lied about his name when they first met, and her publicist is suspicious of why he is at the convention.

After the miscommunication is resolved and the attraction between them takes off like a runaway train, Jessie starts thinking about taking another chance on him. Grayson pretty much plays the role of “he wants her/he wants her not”, as he struggles with a misguided notion being CEO means he can’t be in a relationship. When Jessie finds out about Grayson’s business deal, things go awry, and he ends up having to fight to keep his girl.

I have to admit I found myself liking the heroine more than the hero. It bothered me he got off too easy for lying about his name. However, the great cast of secondary characters, laugh out loud humorous dialog, and flowing writing style more than made up for that blip on this reviewer’s radar. For only 114 pages, Ms. Sharp did a good job weaving an entertaining romantic tale. Here’s to hoping Jessie’s publicist gets her own story, as well.

A light fun sexy read that will give you a great afternoon ...
By Bette Hansen
A light fun sexy read that will give you a great afternoon of enjoyment! A year ago Grayson and Jessie spent an amazing night together. The morning after didn't go quite as well as either expected. She woke up alone. He came back to an empty hotel room. Never have they spoken about that night. Now he's running her publishing house and she needs to deal with him. At least for the conference weekend!! With the sparks flying between them, they know a showdown is inevitable but who will come out the other side??

I definitely recommend this one.

I was given this book for my honest review

“You know. Some chick with crazy hair and spiked heels once told me romance was meeting the person you care enough about to sacrifice for.” His face sobered “After last night, I’m not at all sure what’s in the cards for me. But I think we need to have a serious talk. About everything. Business. Pleasure. All of it. But I’d like a shower and some food first. Grayson

Grayson-cute and sexy

Jessie-author, sassy, pretty

Grayson and Jessie’s journey reminded me of the first time one gets on a rollercoaster. Scared, frightened, antsy and over all euphoric. From sweating when one gets standing on line for this infamous ride to the first time knowing that soon we will be put in a position that we have never come across before. The dynamics of the appeal that it brought to us is now becoming the reality. The sitting locked in place to the start of the forward motion, the spiraling, the depths that we plunge, the rising above all of it to then be dropped and spiraled again is such a rush that are hearts become in awe of it all.

The sex between Jessie and Grayson is like grande biscuits when you open the package for the first time and put them on a baking sheet your heart beats a bit faster. Putting them in the oven to await if they will arise or fall in the oven is just breathtaking for some the first time this is done. When opening the oven it becomes our delight and the heat within the first bite is totally tantalizing. Yummy

The author did a wonderful job in showing a side of Grayson which at first read about him becomes worrisome but with Jessie to set the him straight he becomes stronger than he ever could think possible. The strength and the weaknesses between this couple is harmonizing. In the end though you will have to pick up this read to see if Jessie and Grayson make it to their forever and a day love.

Happy Reading
