I read Freya's last book and liked it, but I wouldn't say it blew me away. With her latest release Rumours, I actually picked it up and started it but then put it down as I was struggling with it. Very occasionally this happens to me and I just go back to it. Stupidly, I left this too long to go back to. I had it in the back of my head that maybe I wouldn't like it, silly woman that I am! When I picked up Rumours for the second time I wondered what on earth made me put it down the first time?!?

Stella Hutton is a single mum who has landed a new job working at her Uncle's estate agency. Her colleagues are not the most appealing of people and very early on I quite liked Stella as she was just an ordinary woman trying to make the best of a bad situation. On the other side we have Xander who grew up in Longbridge Hall where Lady Lydia lives. Stella soon realises that rumours are the thing that keep these villagers gossiping. When there is a hint that Longbridge Hall may well be for sale, things start to unravel.

Stella finds herself battling against all and sundry and Xander is one such person. He at first appears very guarded, bordering on the permanently grumpy. However, it didn't take that long for the story to reveal the reasons for his attitude surrounding all the rumours. Before long I realised that I was at the halfway stage and reluctant to stop reading, even for work! Lady Lydia who seems to be the glue that holds this all together is actually quite a difficult character but one that I immediately loved. Maybe because she was so difficult that's why I liked her so much. The second half of the book was just as good, if not better than the first half.

I found myself whizzing through the pages, anxious to know what will become of all the characters and villagers that live near Longbridge Hall. I was truly disappointed to finish this book and am really looking forward to reading the next one. I can understand why some people may not like this book as it differs somewhat from the last book of hers I read, but I really enjoyed it.

Freya North writes stories that pull you in from the first page and immediately hook you -- you WANT to know what the characters will do and how things will work out. Yet, not much happens really, the revelations are not "dramatic" and you feel like you have stepped into the lives of everyday people for a quick snapshot -- enough to know them well and to like them and to care about them. Being able to grab your reader with this kind of story is an art and Freya North excels at it. That said, though this book is engaging, it isn't her best: it falls a bit flat and the characters are lacking in the depth and the humor that is present in some of her other books isn't there. It is still good "comfort" reading. If this is your first Freya North book, it isn't the best one to start with -- I might recommend "Fen" or "Pillow Talk". But for those who are already North fans, this is a fun read.

My favourite of Freya North's is "Pillow Talk" -which in my opinion gets a 5 . This is a nice read though and worth reading if you have enjoyed any others by this author. I love how seamless Freya North's writing is her stories have the ability to pull you in -it's like you are the virtual 'fly on the wall' .Yet they are quick reads too -great entertainment- Thanks Freya:)

Mixed feelings

Some of the case examples seem a bit too personal and almost vindictive.

In one case the author sites "a personal friend, a dental school student" who "called once or twice a day to unload his serious emotional problems on me." And then the author goes on to describe how that man broke off his friendship with him.

On the very next page he cites his daughter, Carley, who "used to go to the medical school cafeteria dressed in surgical scrubs to pretend she was a doctor (weird, but no weirder than the crush she developed on her dermatologist, whom she used to follow around with a girlfriend, who was also in love with him)." Actual quote... and it goes on to trash her new husband whom he calls "a schizophrenic stalker" as well as her husband's "crazy family." Which all comes across as a bit petty.

And then there's the case example from "A negative "review" on Amazon.com" where he quotes parts of a review (not the whole review) where a woman calls another of the author's books "The most redundant book I have ever read...very superficial...some sections...are so superficial he should have left them out altogether..." etc... This is to show that "avoidants" are judgmental and prone to angry outbursts... This along with a heading of another of her reviews, "This flashlight sucks."

I found it really affected my view of the author's credibility. I sometimes found myself psycho-analysing him instead of me.

There are some great things about the book, though.

The author lays out pretty much all the information anyone could want about Avoidant Personality Disorders, including diagnosing and treatment. There were some great insights into my own personal issues, especially in the area of relationships, as well as some good ways to chip away at it the disorder. But it's a very daunting thing to attempt or even to rationalize for an avoidant. It would be much easier for an already fickle, judgmental group of people to accept this material without some of the author's added personal drama.

some useful (overpriced) information

This book isn't what I expected. I will say that there are definitely some helpful insights in here, but the majority of the book is just one long case study after another (after another), and an overview of the different kinds of therapies used to treat AVPD. There really isn't much new information, just elaborations on the same old stuff that anyone who is familiar with the disorder would already know. In some instances it just feels like he's reaching for material. For example, he includes a (negative) Amazon.com customer review of his last book, and spends a page and a half discussing how the reviewer's negative response to his book showed that the reviewer was exhibiting anger-related avoidant behaviors. Maybe this review will make his next book.

The only sections of the book that I found useful were his discussion of the cognitive-behavioral aspects of the disorder (paranoid thinking, over-generalization, and worst-case scenario thinking), and AVPD's co-morbidity with other disorders, but he only offers a few paragraphs of discussion on each one. Also, the case studies get to be pretty tedious. I found myself skimming them after a while.

I would only recommend this book to someone who hasn't already bought and read "Distancing." I don't think many other readers will get much from it, and I'm pretty sure most of them would regret shelling out the 40 bucks.

Interesting and compassionate treatment of a neglected diagnosis

Interesting treatment of an interesting topic which has received very little attention (in the form of works accessible to laypeople). Discusses reasons for this neglect, including the tendency of many professionals to lump AvPD together with Social Phobia (along with the author's reasons why he believes this is a bad idea.)

Uses many case studies to illustrate examples of what he's talking about, although sometimes digresses into using examples from his personal/professional life in what seemed like a slightly strange way to me (if nothing else I thought he could have simply described the incidents as belonging to an anonymous client.) This is something he's done in several of his previous works as well. (I have not read either of his works on Avoidant Personality Disorder so I cannot compare this work to them, or say whether it is simply a case of hardcover "rechauffée".)

Is generally good about not aggressively pathologizing subjects (although it does creep in a little) and not pulling any political punches in how to locate "blame"; also makes the important distinction that having some of the symptoms of AvPD does not by definition mean one has the full-blown "disorder" (the mental health profession is long overdue for dimensional vs. categorical diagnoses IMO).

Makes an admirable attempt unlike many mental health professionals to focus not only on childhood experiences within the context of the parent-child triangle (hangover of Freudianism?) while neglecting peer/sibling relationships and/or larger interpersonal realities. Does not, however, really refer to larger political let alone cross-cultural factors (as when he "diagnoses" a Greek-American man based entirely on a letter without taking into account the family expectations that often exist within that group). Also has the courage to critique the sacred cow of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and make a plea for the integration of (pure) insight-based modes of healing into treatment. (In the context of the former makes the argument that cognitive therapy implicitly blames the patient, since it locates the source of the problems in his/her cognitive processes--I would go one further, however, and say that virtually *all* therapy since Freud has made that implicit judgment about clients since he [Freud] made his fateful decision to declare his patients' descriptions of being molested as subconscious wish-fulfillments [conceptualized thru the Oedipal Complex] rather than literal accounts of sex abuse [or metaphorical representations of extreme boundary violations]).

Also makes the unorthodox (to me) suggestion that in some cases pharmacotherapy is *not* indicated, as well as some interesting suggestions for treatment, as when for example he writes that for many avoidants, the advice to "do your own thing" should be avoided, since it often has a tendency to encourage them to continue pursuing isolating and/or idiosyncratic behavior patterns which contribute to their suffering.

Technicalities:

Would have liked it if he had devoted more than two sentences to passive-aggressive avoidants (especially since he has already written a book on passive-aggression.)

Would have been nice if table of contents had included subchapter titles/listings (perhaps a cost-cutting decision on the part of the publisher?).

Uses the German word "Anlage" oddly, without capitalizing the first letter or italicizing it or putting it in quotes (editors?), which can induce some people probably not to realize it's a foreign word.

The word "lose" is spelled "lyse" several times throughout the text.

Also uses the word Zen seemingly to refer to *all* Buddhist practice(s), in the context of discouraging an overly withdrawn approach to the world (did this in a previous book as well). While the point is well-taken it is perhaps somewhat injudicious to true Buddhist practice, Zen or otherwise, since it (to me) conflates much of what these disciplines offer with their popular (mis)conceptions.

Misuses the word "disinterested" (like most people nowadays) when he means "uninterested" (disinterested means neutral or objective).

As a final note I would love to see this author tackle some other diagnoses, in particular either Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) or PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)-I think his insights and writing styles could be very useful to many people, myself included.

The Best Yet

So many books try and explain ecg's in language that is understandable to the practicing RN but this is the only book I've found that is useful. I'm buying a new version to replace my very worn out one.

Educational and entertaining

As a lawyer who has practiced for 25 years, I find that it's sometimes difficult to explain to kids (especially my own) what I actually do for a living. Enter Spencer Aronfeld, with Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer. Finally, a book that explains the practice of law in a kid-friendly and entertaining way.

Because I'm the author of The Writer's Guide to the Courtroom: Let's Quill All the Lawyers (Get It Write), I also blog and teach about using the law in writing. From the amount of time it takes to become a lawyer to the types of legal practice, Sara Rose gets the details of law practice right. And unlike certain kid lawyers in books who shall not be named, Sara Rose handles a "case" without crossing over into the dread area of unauthorized practice of law.

This is a great book for lawyer parents to explain what they do, and for kids who are interested in learning more about being a lawyer.

Great book for great kids!

This book has beautiful illustrations and its put together very well. Im not a pro on children's books but I would say the age for this book is probably more like 7-12 years old. The text is lengthy so its not really for reading to your kid. That being said, its a great book and the money goes to a great cause. The author is doing wonderful things and this book is a great asset to his non-profit organization. The story is excellent and really shows how children can make a difference in this world if they stand up for what they believe in. Highly recommend!

Adorable and well-done

When author Spencer M Aronfeld asked whether I'd be interested in reviewing a children's book about lawyers, I couldn't resist. I had never seen one before and was curious to see how he could pull this off.

Well Aronfeld *does* pull it off. Quite well, in fact.

Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer tells the story of Sara Rose, a little girl who likes to argue. Because of that, people tell her she should be a lawyer when she grows up -- many current lawyers and law students may relate.

But after meeting a real live attorney at her lemonade stand, Sara quickly learns there's a lot more to being a lawyer than arguing, and that even arguing has a purpose. Soon thereafter, Sara sees an injustice at her school and works hard to influence a fair outcome, even learning about the appellate process along the way.

This is a really cute, well-done book that covers an impressive amount of ground in its thirty or so pages. I love that important concepts surrounding the legal profession are broken down into easy-to-understand terms and examples -- and then demonstrated for the reader.

Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer should be in every elementary school library and would make a great gift for that special, perhaps argumentative kid in your life. I'm giving it five stars.

Just Horrible.

This is absolutely horrible! 90% of the book is just "get a doctor's opinion and medication", and the little bit about home remedies just re-iterates both the good internet theories and every bad one. There is honestly no purpose in this whatsoever. The author even had comments like "I think this is bad for you". Really? You didn't bother to research to see if it was??!?!?!

This book could change your life!!

THESE METHODS WORK! To say I am ecstatic is an understatement!!! I searched Amazon during an RLS flare up and instead of looking for help from an author who is a Dr, I thought who better to write a book on what is really effective then a fellow RLS sufferer who can tell me what actually works for her and not a random Dr with his little philosophies on what "should" work. OMG, this woman is a genius who did a boatload of research and compiled it in a sweet summary! I did an MSLT several years ago and was diagnosed with RLS among several other sleep disorders. I've been on Ropinirole for it for ages and keep having to up the dose every several months, so am super grateful to have finally stumbled upon some natural treatments.

She has a lot of great info on symptoms, diagnosis, and stuff like that but since I was in a flare-up I skipped straight to chapter 8 on my Kindle which is packed with loads and loads of remedies. I promise, there's no way you'll walk away from reading this without finding one that helps you! I experienced relief literally within seconds of trying one of her methods. And these aren't some fishy weird homeopathic things, all are backed by solid scientific research which she explains in layman's terms when presenting each one. I cannot wait to try more! Emily, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!!! You're a total God-send! This book was worth every penny and then some. Very hopeful I will soon be able to quit the the Ropinirole with trying these treatments.

If I could I would give this book more stars ...

If I could I would give this book more stars. It is a must read for RLS sufferers. I have been one for over 50 years (heredity) and did not know half of what is in the book. I suffer from muscle jerks day and night. My doctor has tried the latest drugs. Repinirole helps some but I am maxed on it and it leaves me sleepy during the day. Using several of the suggestions in the book have made it bearable now. The book has helped so much that I purchased two additional copies for my daughters as they are sufferers as well.

Amazing Grace - Amazing Story

A lot of times I read reviews where people say things like, "I laughed, I cried, etc" and I've written those, too. But this time ... wow. I really mean it. I absolutely love Ms Crewe's writing. Amazing Grace was open and honest, plunging unexpectedly into very dark and painful situations, then returning time and time again to dance with hope. The dialogue was perfect - easy, relatable, and very, very real. Ms Crewe has created a masterpiece with Amazing Grace. I didn't want it to end. Of course every story has to end at some point, but she kept it going, extending the reader's experience just enough. Even after I closed the cover, I knew I would never forget Grace. Wish I could head up to Sydney and say hi sometime.

Amazing woman!

Definitely deserves five stars! Don't skip this story. I hated for it to end. The main character is so strong and real she engages you immediately. Through tragedy Grace shines with her strong will and heart. Sometimes though the things we experience are terrible they can open our eyes to see behind another's pain. Because of her pain Grace is able to reclaim her family and be fulfilled.
