About the Author

Elizabeth E. Guzmán is the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program at the University of Iowa. Previously, she served as Language Coordinator at St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict, Director of the Spanish Program at Yale University, and Coordinator and Co-Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Language Program at The University of Michigan. In her native Chile, she supervised instructors of English as a Foreign Language. Ms. Guzmán received her B.A in English from Universidad de Santiago (Chile) and her M.A. in English as a Second Language from West Virginia University, and then pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades and several earlier editions of Mosaicos.

 

Paloma Lapuerta holds the title ofProfessor of Spanish at Central Connecticut State University, where she teaches courses in Spanish language, culture, and literature. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at higher institutions around the world, including Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and the United States, where she has taught at the University of Michigan, Dartmouth College, and the Middlebury College Spanish School. She completed her Licenciatura in Spanish Philology at the University of Salamanca, and she holds a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She has published numerous articles and a book on Spanish culture and literature. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

 

Judith E. Liskin-Gasparro is a professor of Spanish at the University of Iowa, where she teaches courses in second language acquisition, pedagogy, and Spanish language. She is the co-director of FLARE (Foreign Language Acquisition Research and Education), which offers an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, and she was formerly the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program. Previously, she taught at Middlebury College and worked as a test development consultant at Educational Testing Service. She received her A.B. in Spanish from Bryn Mawr College, her M.A. from Princeton University and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in Foreign Language Education. She has published articles and books on language learning and teaching and has led many workshops for language teachers.She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

About the Author
Michael Cook
Originally from London, England, Michael Cook emigrated to St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1965 where he began directing plays and teaching at Memorial University. He has written over fifty plays, many of them exploring Newfoundland’s history and culture—the most notable of which, Jacob’s Wake, was published in 1975. After moving to remote outport of Random Island, Cook wrote the dramas collected in Tiln & Other Plays (1976). Michael Cook moved back to St. John’s shortly before his death at the age of 61.

Jacob's Wake

Jacob's Wake is an excellent play set in Canada in a little seaport town. The characters are rich and believable. Dysfunction abounds within the household: Skipper slips in and out of reality, mourning the death years before of his grandson, Jacob. He has little time for any of the others, except Rosie, his daughter-in-law. She is sweet-natured and hardworking, and has a special relationship with her ailing in-law. While the rest of the family members have little respect (and seemingly no love) for each other, a storm front rages--becoming stronger and more threatening as the play progresses. It seems that judgment may not be far off. While the story is sad, it is well-written and moves along quickly. Cook has done a fine job in bringing this world and its occupants to life.

Elizabeth C. Pomeroy (Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin; LCSW) is professor at University of Texas at Austin and co-director of the Institute for Grief, Loss and Family Survival. She is the editor-in-chief of Social Work, the official professional journal of the National Association of Social Workers. Her previous books include The Clinical Assessment Workbook with K. Wambach, and The Grief Assessment and Intervention Workbook: A Strengths-Based Perspective which she co-authored with Renee Bradford Garcia. Renee Bradford Garcia (LCSW; MSW, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) is a clinical social worker in private practice and a practice affiliate with The Institute for Grief, Loss and Family Survival. Her career as a social worker includes extensive experience with palliative care, bereavement, loss and life transitions. She has over 15 years experience helping people discover their strengths and use them to find greater fulfillment and inner peace.

Ross Bolleter is a Zen teacher in the Diamond Sangha tradition. He trained with Robert Aitken and John Tarrant, and received Transmission from them in 1997. This information and material includes such things as sections on ‘The Philosophical Heritage of the Five Ranks’ (discussing essential Zen sources like Nagarjuna, the I-Ching, and Huayen Buddhism), ‘Working With the Five Ranks’ (discussing approaches for ‘study’ and ‘practice’ including their role in koan training, as well as possible approaches for shikantaza practitioners), and ‘The Five Modes of Time and Timelessness’ (discussing the nature of ‘time’ in Zen/Buddhism). This book also includes two translations of two of the classic treatises on the Five Ranks, one by Caoshan Benji (840-901), and one by Linji Yixuan (d. 866).

One particular characteristic of Ross Bolleter’s expression is his rare insight into the nature and role of language in Zen practice-enlightenment. Unlike many Zen writers, Bolleter does not shy away from the fact (or worse, deny it) that Zen language is not independent of Zen itself. For instance he writes:

Little did I understand at first the brilliant clarity of Bolleter's prose

As preparation for a retreat soon to be led by Jack Duffy Roshi, I purchased Dongshan's Five Ranks: Keys to Enlightenment. Little did I understand at first the brilliant clarity of Bolleter's prose. But later on when I also realized that this book is an explication of the brilliant "Song of the Jewel Mirror Samadhi" that I have chanted with great feeling at the monastery for many years, I was delighted. That "Song" is an attempt by a number of Zen masters, over a span of centuries, to provide a clear synopsis of Dongshan's "Five Ranks". As such, I think this book is a treasure. Nine full bows to you from me, too, Ross Bolleter.

Didn't possibly think you could go on about each one to this degree. Some repetition. You can tell he ate and slept this for a long time going deeper than most would care to go. But all in all a very very good read. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately a bit disappointing

Danielle is an awesome writer with great imagination and the ability to capture her reader and immerse them in a world of passion, intrigue, action and deceit. I gave this book only a 3 star because of the writing skills and plot. However, for those of you who have read the Royal series and were anxiously waiting Mattias story. This book holds much of that great magic Danielle weaves, but unfortunately lacked some of the passion we are accustomed to seen in the Royal series.

I think the story line was great, but the interaction between both main characters was constantly strained leaving me feeling frustrated and as if the story did not quite end making the ending feel short and anti climatic!.. Mattias' character was such as powerful, passionate and sensual individual that his role in this book left me wanting. I just feel that the stubbornness displayed during the story between Mattias and Alannah could have at least been played up a little more with more attraction and action between the two. Instead of the constant fighting and standoff scenes between the two.

This new series still has the capability of capturing my heart but with this book I did not feel Mattias story was conclusive nor did he get his full happily ever after I was expecting for him. The author indicated only one book would be done on Mattias but I just did not feel it was fulfilling!

What romance? Spoilers

I read the Royals series with Sander and Chey. Loved them. I was surprised to see a new series begin with Mattias and was looking forward to learning where Mattias was for the finale of The Wrath of the King. This book answered those questions and left the door open for more intrigue. I am glad for that. I like a little more to my romance stories than H and h jumping in bed. However this book was also supposed to be Mattias' story. A story in which he would get his hea. . For those of you who enjoy a romance story you will be disappointed. there is NO romance in this story. (SPOILER ALERT) Matties sleeps with someone else (twice) and Alannah hears them. She is upset and ignores him and he gets mad at her. The angst continues throughout the whole story. With a few thoughts from each character about their thoughts and feeling for each other. He chooses his secrets over her and she caves and the book ends abruptly in the middle of them having sex. Really what kind of romance is that. Maybe Danielle will continue their story while telling of the others in the Royal Elite. I for one do not care and will not be reading them. Sorry I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

The royal elite. Mattias

This book entwines with the wrath of the king, book 5...This book mainly focuses on Prince Mattias....which is pretty awesome. There are some questions unanswered in book 5 and this gives you answers or insight on Mattias. In the other books, the Royal family is introduced and so much interaction, they are really left out here, which is sort of sad...Sander Dare and Leander are involved but not much else. Oh well..This book focused on the group of the Elite.....behind the scenes, protectors....
Mattias and Alannah are introduced and I was a little shocked on the last chapter...hopefully more books to give more insight on their relationship....May be some info on Mister Ahsan...ooh la la.....This is more 3 1/2 stars, I like this book and I love the series but I just didn't feel a lot of satisfaction as in the previous books..but I would recommend, I enjoy this author.

Emotional read,mostly great with some subjective issues....

I had a real love hate relationship with this book. The majority of it was absolutely brilliant, heart wrenching, emotional and giving a portrait of loss, grief and healing, with our main character Lucy still trying to come to terms with the loss of her child when his killer is released – setting off a whole new range of emotions that threaten to tear her apart.

Things I loved: The difficult and emotional relationship Lucy has with her eldest child, who is now a teenager with all the ups and downs that brings, but with the added difficulty of his own guilty feelings about the day his brother went missing. I found this to be extremely well drawn, realistic and it absolutely tugged on my heartstrings. Generally as well the issues between Lucy and her ex husband are also intelligently written with a devastating look at how the loss of a child can affect and in this case end a marriage.

I also thought the mystery element was very well done – when another child disappears it falls to the lead officer in Jack’s case to take on the mantle of another child abduction investigation – and his thoughts, feelings and actions are for the most part shrewdly woven into the narrative to give a different voice and attitude to proceedings. A well flowing and excellent plot to be sure.

But then…sex. Oh dear me. I am aware that this is very subjective and in general I am not adverse to a darn good sex scene if it is in keeping with the rest of the novel and adds something to the characters or the plot that gives them a greater depth. But for me, in this case, it just BAM took me right out of the moment. Initially the growing attraction between Lucy and Matt (the police officer) was subtle and added to the flow, but then at seemingly to me VERY odd times they went in for a descriptively written moment of bed hopping. There was one particular instance of this that had me shaking my head – I cant say more due to spoilers but it really did grate on me personally as a reader due to what was going on around them at the time. For me, it was not required, didnt really add anything and all it did was remove me from the emotion of the tale – and it IS a very emotional story.

Back to the plus side, I like how Ms Kelly has managed to make me think about acts of vengeance, whether it is ever justified and also to give real consideration to our justice system and how, when an offender is supposedly “rehabilitated”, what the consequences are to both victim and perpertrator when he or she is released back into the community. It was an interesting sub plot if you like, how the decision is made and how wide ranging the affects of that can be – and it was definitely part of the book that engaged my brain.

Overall then, yes as I said. Love/Hate relationship for me as a reader but I would still have no hesitation recommending it to fans of mystery and psychological tales, and it certainly has not put me off reading more from this author in the future because the writing itself was great and the main basis of the story was addictively good.

Entertaining Reading, Raw and Insightful

This was a novel that I found very easy to read, yet it divided me at times as a reader between just liking it and loving it. I found the second half of the book much better and more intense (and better written) than the first and I enjoyed it a lot more.

My Review:

Lucy has been to hell and back as a Mother, something I can't imagine in a million years. It's eight years since her young son Jack was tortured and murdered horrifically by a young teenager, a senseless killing that impacted the entire family. Lucy is now divorced from her then husband, the stress and changes that came after Jack's murder was too much to hold it together.

Now the killer of young Jack is being set free and put in a witness protection program after serving only 8 years for the murder of the boy. The whole country and the local community are up in arms, Lucy feels anger and a sense that justice has not been done. She's still not moved on really from the loss of her son.

I could not connect with Lucy as a character no matter how hard I tried, she remained out of touch and elusive. DI Matt Wilson on the other hand I thought was a really well written and likeable character, when his relationship with Lucy becomes complicated we see lots of different sides to both of these characters.

The first half of the book whilst highly readable really explored more the feelings around events and the relationship that Lucy has with Matt and with her eldest son Ricky. Ricky is damaged from the death of his young brother all those years ago and his character was really well written all through the book. Ricky is also a very well developed and tangible character, flawed and easy to connect with, he is going through so much himself.

When another child goes missing all eyes and fingers point to the recently released child killer. This is where the book really picks up pace and we have a few interesting plots intersecting together.

The book explores all sides of the human nature in it's rawness. But still, there was something that held me back from LOVING this book but I can't really put my finger on what. I think I wanted more connection with Lucy for one, and I had a like/dislike going on at times with her. I empathised with her situation but couldn't FEEL her, if that makes any sense.

The plot is really good towards the end surrounding the other missing child, the vigilante atmosphere of the town that wants blood from the recently released child killer really hikes things up a notch. At the same time relational matters are coming to a head between Lucy, her ex-husband, DI Matt and her son Ricky. Where will it all end up?

I still felt the book had a bit more to give, I did really like it don't get me wrong and recommend it as a good book to read, but I wanted something more, a wow factor, something that blew me away. All in all an enjoyable read, with a few interesting twists to keep you on your toes. A good exploration of the aftermath of violent crime on a family.

A very emotional read

Eight years prior Lucy’s son was murdered by a teenager. That teenager is release and given a new identity. Lucy wants to know who and where he is now. The officer who was on the case of her murdered son brings her older son home after he is caught shoplifting. Lucy has a very tough strained relationship with her eldest son. She is still trying to cope with the loss of her murdered son when the killer is released and given his new identity. Another child goes missing and Matt is the investigator. They believe it is the same person who murdered Lucy’s son eight years earlier. Lucy and Officer Matt are attracted to each other and this develops into a relationship.

The readers experiences the grief and loss associated with Lucy losing her son and how it affected her elder son’s life direction as he is dealing with the grief and guilt. This is a very emotional book. I gave it 4 stars.
