I have read about 6 chess books in my school library. I didnot find the teaching to be as serious as it should be for kids over 8 years old. I learned a lot more from "Chess For Juniors" and "ideas Behind the Chess Openings" in the library.

Not the Greatest Book to Begin with

CHESS FOR KIDS will get you started with the the very basic rules and will teach you some starting strategies and tactics.

Good Things about this book:

1) It covers the rules you need to know as a non-tournament player.

2) It covers just enough strategy and ideas to get you started.

3) Lots of Colour - makes it look attractive.

Not Good Things about this book:

1) It is written so that young kids cannot understand the level of reading level (should come with a notice: Batteries Required, Opps! I mean older reader required to help young readers),

2) The order of things is out of wack sometimes. This can make the learning confusing.

There are better books written for the beginner or children. For a teen or older Learn Chess by Alexander and Beach is much better organized and has a lot more depth. There are a couple chess books for the junior beginner that have a lower reading level.

No doubt about it - the graphics and picutures in CHESS FOR KIDS are excellent. This is what I consider to be the good points of the book, now on to the weaknesses,

The weaknesses are:

The order in which the material is given needs some improving. This is not the exact order that a kid (or an adult) should be taught. This creates a degree of confusion.

The level of reading is not well suited for young kids to learn from, and

Some of the ways that things are explained, such as in the rules and certain aspects of strategies could use some improvement.

Absolutely wonderful book on making miniatures. Clear and beautiful pictures with fantastic instructions. This book will be used many times in my miniature making- I love it and would recommend it to anyone wanting to make their own dollhouse furniture.

maybe not for the Kindle Fire.

Not sure how to rate this. I loved the design of all of the pieces, & they seemed simple enough to put together. The problem I had was that I got this for my Kindle Fire, & all of the steps were out of order. Wha?! It jumped from step 1 to step 9, then back to 4, etc. The measurements were difficult to figure out as well. There was a type of chart that just looked like a mess of numbers. Maybe I'll get a hard copy one day, but for now I will just try my best to flip around with the Kindle version. Harumph.

Gregg Stoner spent two enlistments in the Marines during the Vietnam War and lived fives years in a boot camp environment. His first assignment was as a drill instructor, replacing his own drill instructor. He is currently the secretary of the Crow Crawford Chapter of the Drill Instructors Association.

The Best Marine Corps Boot Camp Book Currently Available

I stood on the yellow footprints in June of 1975 serving in the Marine Corps from 1975-1979. Over the years I have read every boot camp book I could find. This one is, by a wide margin, the best of them all. Where I have a problem with Mr. Stoner being so vocally anti war yet joining the Marine Corps (huh???) he did manage to write a great book. I also have a problem in that Mr. Stoner never served overseas (we were at war in Vietnam at the time) so I suspect that he may have had some credibility issues on the grinder as most of his fellow DI's would have been decorated war veterans who possessed a wealth of information that they could pass on to their recruits. Mr. Stoner was a war avoiding clerk typist.

Most Marine Corps boot camp books focus on the recruit experience. A few focus on the experience as viewed by the DI. This book is unique in that it looks at boot camp from both perspectives. Mr. Stoner starts out talking about his own experience as a recruit then later becomes a DI himself. The most interesting part of the book, to me, was learning about the DI school curriculum and how DI's viewed things. Every recruit, at the time, thinks that what's happening to them is unique, but boot camp is evidently heavily choreographed and follows a predictable formula. Most mass visits to the "pit" happen at the same time to each platoon when they hit certain trigger points in their training. It's been that way almost forever evidently.

This would be a good book for anyone who wants to know what Marine Corps Boot camp is all about. I was a Marine Drill Instructor myself and know first hand.

When I heard about this book on Leatherneck.com, I thought that the idea of a book written from the viewpoint of the recruit and of the DI being the same person would be a great read. I was right. I went through MCRD San Diego in 1977, so visualizing what Gregg was putting forth, and what I went through, was like being there again. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of, or is definitely going to join the corps. I'm sure it's different now than it was in my time, much less Gregg's, but it would still provide the basics of what a modern day boot would experience. One thing that impressed me of Mr. Stoner's story is the fact that even though he did not agree with the Vietnam war, he still joined up and served his time. Not only that, but he did a damn good job of it. I salute you, Mr. Stoner, and thank you for putting your experiences in writing for all of us to read.

Until April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth was one of the most famous actors of his time, and President Abraham Lincoln had even watched him perform. But his most significant performance at a theater did not take place on the stage. That night, Booth became one of history’s most infamous assassins when he assassinated President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Although Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had surrendered days earlier, Booth believed the war was not yet over because Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's army was still fighting the Union Army, so he and his group of conspirators plotted to kill Lincoln and other top officials in a bid to decapitate the federal government and help the South.
Perhaps not surprisingly, the actor’s flair for the dramatic came at a cost to the plot. It took almost no time for the shocked public and the federal government to begin unraveling Booth’s conspiracy, which had mostly faltered from the beginning. Following the shooting, America’s most famous manhunt commenced, which itself became the stuff of legends.
November 22, 1963 started as a typical Friday, and many Americans were unaware that President Kennedy was even heading to Dallas, Texas. John and Jackie arrived in Dallas in the morning, with Texas Governor John Connally alongside them and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson due to arrive later to meet them there. As the First Couple rode with the Connallys in an open motorcade en route to a speech Kennedy would deliver later. As they waved to the people lining the streets, around 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time, Governor Connally’s wife turned around to the first couple and said, “Mr. President, you can't say Dallas doesn't love you.”
Moments later, the most controversial assassination in American history took place as a series of shots were fired at the motorcade. The indelible images provided by the Zapruder film of Kennedy being hit in the throat and head, followed by Jackie crawling over the backseat toward the trunk are now instantly recognizable. basic book for those looking for brief overview of both assassinations. Not too in depth on details or anything new in terms of events or theories.

pretty thin

I was looking for a great exploration of the two assisinations but I found these two to be weak. Barely an overview/outline of the events one expects is taught in fifth grade.

I really enjoyed this book also not included was that Kennedy's Secretary her last name was Lincoln and Lincoln secrertary was Kennedy.
